Runt is a 2024 Australian family feature adapted from Craig Silvey’s novel. It follows 11-year-old Annie Shearer and her adopted stray dog, Runt, as they try to win an agility championship and help save their family farm. The film’s announced Australian cinema release date was 19 September 2024; that date is now historical, not a current release notice.
What is Runt about?
Annie and Runt set their sights on the agility championship at London’s Krumpets Dog Show. Their goal is to help save the Shearer family farm. Screen Australia describes the 2024 film as a family feature based on Silvey’s novel.

When did Runt come out in Australia?
PerthNow published its first-look article on 20 June 2024, the day ScreenHub reported the announced Australian cinema release date: 19 September 2024. These are dated preview and release details, not evidence of how the film performed. The sources cited here do not establish an Australian box-office gross or ranking, so the “top dog” framing should be read as an aspiration, not a result.
What is the film’s classification?
Australian Classification records Runt as PG, with mild coarse language. Its classification date is 13 August 2024. Screen Australia lists the runtime as 91 minutes, while Australian Classification lists 92 minutes; the official records differ, so neither figure should be treated as definitive.

How successful was the original book?
The film adapts a novel with a substantial readership and awards recognition. In an announcement dated 25 October 2023, the Government of Western Australia said more than 100,000 copies of Silvey’s book had been sold by that date. ABC reported on 8 September 2025 that the novel won the 2023 Book of the Year for Younger Readers from both the Australian Book Industry Awards and the Children’s Book Council of Australia. These are book milestones, not measures of the film’s box office.
What Craig Silvey said about audiences
In an ACTF interview published 19 September 2024, Silvey described watching audiences respond to the film: “Sitting in the audience with them while they’re howling with laughter or there’s sniffles and tears, seeing how invested the audiences have been, is the most rewarding and fulfilling moment of my career, I have to say.”
