The Nostromo is a commercial starship, the Sulaco belongs to the military-sequel setting of Aliens, Prometheus carries an expedition seeking humanity’s origins, and the Covenant is a colony ship. Production sources add a few specific connections between their on-screen worlds and how the films were made.
What are the iconic spaceships in the Alien movies?
Four vessels make a useful starting point: the Nostromo in Alien (1979), the Sulaco in Aliens, Prometheus in Prometheus (2012), and the Covenant in Alien: Covenant (2017). The first two are identified with the original film and its sequel; the latter pair anchor stories about humanity’s origins and interstellar colonization.
That is a comparison of narrative roles, not a complete technical ranking. The sources cited here establish selected story and production details, but do not provide a consistent set of ship specifications or a full design history for every vessel.
How do the ships’ missions shape their stories?
| Ship | Film | Established story role | Production or reference evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nostromo | Alien (1979) | Commercial starship carrying Dallas, Ripley, and the crew; its crew responds to a signal and encounters a ruined spacecraft. | A production archive identifies a seven-foot version as the principal filming model and the first model constructed. Propstore archive |
| Sulaco | Aliens | The ship in the sequel, set in a military context. | Identified in an FX Networks podcast excerpt and included in the publisher’s Alien: The Blueprints listing; detailed design history is not established by these sources. FX Networks podcast; Penguin Random House |
| Prometheus | Prometheus (2012) | Ship for an expedition of scientists and explorers seeking humanity’s origins. | D23 says the film is set before Alien and that concept art for Prometheus was inspired by the walls of the Nostromo. D23 |
| Covenant | Alien: Covenant (2017) | Colony ship bound for a remote planet. | Framestore reports completing more than 295 futuristic VFX shots for the film; this is not a count of ship-only shots. Framestore |
Nostromo: a commercial vessel caught in a larger mystery
In Alien, the crew’s response to a signal brings them into contact with a derelict craft. Propstore describes the Nostromo as the commercial starship traveled on by Dallas, Ripley, and the crew. That working-ship premise makes a useful contrast with the grander-purpose missions of the later prequel vessels.

- Based on accounts and sightings of unidentified crafts as described and witnessed over the years
- Includes landing gear and open hatch panels, as well as closed hatch panels for building a flying display model
- Comes in gray, with a plastic clear diffused green lenses perfect for lighting
Behind the scenes, Propstore’s production archive identifies a seven-foot Nostromo as the principal filming model and the first model built. That is a specific production claim about the model used, not a measurement of the fictional ship.
Sulaco: the sequel’s ship, with a thinner documented design record
An FX Networks podcast passage identifies the Sulaco as the spaceship in Aliens. Penguin Random House also lists it among the vessels covered by Alien: The Blueprints. Those sources establish identification and reference-book coverage, but they do not document a designer, technical specifications, or a detailed design history. The film’s military-sequel context is a useful narrative contrast with the commercial Nostromo, not evidence for unverified engineering details.

Prometheus: an expedition linked visually to the original
20th Century Studios describes Prometheus as an expedition of scientists and explorers searching for humanity’s origins. D23 places the story before Alien and reports a concrete visual connection: concept art for Prometheus was inspired by the walls of the Nostromo. This supports a link in visual development without proving that the ships share particular technology or a complete design language.
Covenant: a colony ship with a documented effects workload
20th Century Studios calls the Covenant a colony ship bound for a remote planet. Its purpose differs clearly from the Nostromo’s commercial role: the Covenant carries a colonizing mission, while the Nostromo is a working starship whose crew encounters an unexpected signal.

Framestore says it completed more than 295 futuristic VFX shots for Alien: Covenant. The figure describes effects work for the film as a whole, not a ship-only tally and not proof that every detail of the Covenant was digitally created by that studio.
What production evidence connects the ships?
The available production material offers several distinct kinds of evidence rather than one continuous account of how every ship was designed:
Rank #4
- Target gender: boy
- Physical model: Propstore’s archive documents the Nostromo filming miniature, including its role as the principal model and its seven-foot size.
- Visual-development link: D23 reports that Prometheus concept art drew inspiration from the walls of the Nostromo.
- Visual effects: Framestore reports more than 295 futuristic VFX shots completed for Alien: Covenant, across the film rather than for the ship alone.
- Blueprint reference: Penguin Random House’s Alien: The Blueprints listing names the Nostromo, Sulaco, and Covenant among the ships it covers. The listing does not establish that it contains a complete blueprint for every vessel.
These facts should not be collapsed into a claim that all four ships have equally documented production histories. The sources support a specific model claim for the Nostromo and selected art, effects, and reference-book details for the other comparisons.

Alien: The Blueprints by Graham Langridge is a directly relevant reference. Penguin Random House’s description names the Nostromo, Sulaco, Covenant, and other ships, with coverage spanning the films, including Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Its listing makes it a useful further-reading option, but does not promise a complete blueprint for every ship.

Penguin Random House also describes The Art and Making of Alien: Covenant as an official companion covering the film’s environments, creatures, and technology. That makes it adjacent reading for the Covenant’s production context, although the listing does not present it as a spacecraft-focused book.
