Why Netflix’s Exploding Kittens Is One of 2024’s Strangest Animated Releases

God and the Devil as neighboring house cats: Netflix’s Exploding Kittens turns a chaotic card-game sensibility into a nine-episode animated comedy.

Exploding Kittens is a nine-episode Netflix animated comedy built around a premise that is hard to mistake for anything else: God and the Devil are sent to Earth as house cats, with Godcat moving in with a dysfunctional family and Devilcat living next door. Calling it Netflix’s “weirdest” release of 2024 is a critical judgment, not a measurable ranking—but the collision of cosmic conflict, feline distractions and domestic sitcom trouble makes a strong case for the label.

What is Exploding Kittens on Netflix about?

Netflix’s premise puts God in the body of a cat and sends him to live with the Higgins family. His neighbor is the Devil, also in cat form. The divine rivalry therefore plays out alongside ordinary household problems and the cats’ everyday instincts—a comic mismatch between biblical stakes and house-cat behavior.

Netflix describes the series as an adult-oriented animated comedy. Its first season has nine episodes and premiered on July 12, 2024. The episode descriptions range from the opening “Pilot,” which introduces Godcat and the Higgins household, to fantastical excursions such as a road trip to Hell and the “God Games.” The finale brings Godcat and Devilcat to a challenge involving human nature. Netflix’s title page lists the season’s episodes.

Why call it the weirdest Netflix release of 2024?

“Weirdest” is an opinion, not a verified ranking of Netflix’s releases. The defensible case is the show’s unusual combination: a cosmic battle between good and evil, a dysfunctional family sitcom, and two powerful beings whose lives are constrained by being cats. Rather than treating the superlative as a fact, it is more accurate to say that Exploding Kittens is among the year’s more unusual animated premises.

#1 Best Overall
Exploding Kittens Original Edition, 2-5 Players, Ages 7+ Card Game
  • In this family card game, draw cards and try to avoid the dreaded Exploding Kitten! Use strategic action cards to skip your turn, shuffle the deck, or defuse the Kitten with laser pointers or catnip sandwiches. The last player standing wins!
  • Designed for 2-5 players, ages 7 and up, Exploding Kittens is great for kids, teens, and adults alike. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or want a casual game to break the ice, this easy-to-learn game is perfect for bringing everyone together.
  • Compact for travel, portable for on-the-go, camping, game nights, road trips or a family home evening.
  • Includes 56 cards illustrated by The Oatmeal (each featuring a hilarious cartoon with characters such as Tacocat, Rainbow-Ralphing Cat and All-Seeing Goat Wizard) and an instruction manual (that you’ll probably skim).
  • Our Story: One of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, the hilarious characters, thoughtful design and gameplay simple enough for a good time but complex enough for ultimate replayability, Exploding Kittens has taken the world by storm, with millions of copies sold and a global fanbase.

The premise also explains why the series is not simply a dramatized round of the game. The card game creates tension through players drawing cards until an Exploding Kitten appears; a Defuse card, such as cat toys or catnip, can prevent elimination. That stop-start mechanic supplies comic chaos, but not a continuous story. The series uses the game’s irreverent spirit to build a sustained narrative instead.

Is the Netflix show based on the card game?

Yes. The series is based on the Exploding Kittens card game, but its creators chose not to turn the game mechanics directly into a plot. Co-creator and co-showrunner Matthew Inman told Netflix Tudum that the game did not have a cohesive story to adapt, so the team focused on a story viewers would want to follow rather than forcing gameplay into a narrative. He described the game as a source of random jokes and cats blowing things up.

Rank #2
Exploding Kittens Party Pack, 2-10 Players, Ages 7+ Card Game
  • Exploding Kittens is the fast-paced card game where players dodge the Exploding Kitten using strategy, luck, and a bit of betrayal. A hilarious family game and party game night favorite.
  • What’s Included: 120 cards packed with absurd illustrations from The Oatmeal and a rulebook that’s just as unhinged. This party card game doubles the chaos with the same offbeat humor that made Exploding Kittens one of the most popular funny family games ever made.
  • Designed for 2-10 Players: New cards that let you play with up to 10 players! Almost double the cards from the original version, making it great for two player games or big game night gatherings.
  • Play It Anywhere: Great for family game nights, a party with friends, or accompanying your travel games you take on the go!
  • 10 Years of Chaos: What started as a ridiculous Kickstarter has exploded (literally) into a global phenomenon. Millions of copies later, Exploding Kittens remains the go-to party card game and funny family game for anyone who likes their game night a little unhinged.

That distinction makes the show a narrative adaptation, not an episode-by-episode depiction of how a typical game unfolds. Inman says the series includes Easter eggs for the card game and other games in the franchise. The original game is the relevant product connection; the available information does not establish a special TV-series edition.

Do you need to know the game to watch?

No. In the Netflix Tudum interview, voice actor Sasheer Zamata said viewers do not need to know the card game to enjoy the series. Familiarity may help catch some franchise references, but the central setup—God and the Devil as rival cats caught up in human life—stands on its own.

Is Exploding Kittens appropriate for kids?

Check the rating shown on Netflix in your region if age guidance matters. Labels differ across the cited services: Netflix’s captured title page showed 16+, Netflix Media Center metadata identified the series as TV-MA, and Rotten Tomatoes displayed TV-14. Those labels should not be treated as one universal classification.

Inman gave Netflix Tudum an informal description of the show’s tone, saying it falls somewhere between The Simpsons and Deadpool and calling it “kidult.” He said the writers avoided relying on profanity or heavy-handed adult jokes, while joking that there are “way too many cat buttholes.” That is his personal characterization, not a substitute for the local age rating.

How was the show received?

Reception figures are snapshots, not permanent verdicts. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 74% Tomatometer based on 19 reviews and an 82% Popcornmeter based on 100+ ratings for season one. Its critics’ consensus characterized the heaven-and-hell conflict as daffy slapstick and animated mayhem. The separate critic and audience scores indicate different measures, not unanimous agreement.

Individual reviews varied: the Rotten Tomatoes page lists Lucy Mangan’s July 12, 2024 Guardian review at 1/5, alongside more favorable descriptions of the animation and comic energy. One review should not be mistaken for the overall response.

How successful was the card game?

The available sales figures come from different sources and dates, so they should not be combined into a growth calculation. Netflix Tudum reported in 2024 that more than 35 million copies of the card game had been sold. An April 18, 2022 announcement from About Netflix said Exploding Kittens had reported sales of over 18 million games. These are source-attributed company figures, not independently audited totals.
