The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the 2026 animated follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with a title that connects it to Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy games. Nintendo’s current release information lists April 1, 2026, for the United States and many additional markets, and April 24 for Japan. The official cast includes returning stars and new voices for Yoshi, Rosalina, Honey Queen and other characters. Nintendo has not published a detailed plot synopsis in the official pages cited here, so the confirmed facts are more limited than the title may suggest.
What is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
It is an animated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the 2023 film, and is based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo announced the film under its final title on September 12, 2025. The title and Nintendo’s movie page point to the Galaxy games, but that connection alone does not establish that the film adapts a particular game or follows its events scene by scene.
Nintendo said in 2026 that the 2023 film earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. That is Nintendo’s published figure, not an independently reverified total here. The new film is produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct, Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Brian Tyler composed the score. Nintendo’s March 10, 2026 announcement gives the current release and cast details; Illumination’s film page lists production credits.
When did it come out?
Nintendo’s later release update lists April 1, 2026, for the United States and many additional markets, April 24 for Japan, and releases throughout April in select territories. The earlier September 2025 announcement had listed April 3 for the United States and many markets; use the later date for current US release information. Nintendo’s US movie page also displays April 1 and “Only in Theaters.” See Nintendo’s US movie page.

What is the story about?
The confirmed description is an animated follow-up set in the Super Mario Bros. world. Nintendo’s title and movie page connect the film with Super Mario Galaxy, but the official pages cited here do not provide a detailed plot synopsis. They therefore do not establish the film’s specific storyline, which characters travel where, or whether any events from the games are reproduced. Treat more detailed plot claims as unconfirmed unless they are supported by a later official synopsis.
How does it connect to the Galaxy games?
Nintendo’s movie page links to enhanced versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, playable on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. These are related game releases promoted alongside the movie, not a claim that the film is itself a game. Nintendo’s movie page provides the official links.

The Associated Press reported on April 12, 2026, that the film added an estimated $69 million in the United States and Canada during its second weekend and had reached an estimated $629 million worldwide. Those are dated estimates, not a current October 2026 total. AP also quoted Comscore head of marketplace trends Paul Dergarabedian saying, “For the film to already be over $300 million is just astonishing,” while noting that most tickets were likely sold at lower prices for children.
