Indian literary awards for books in English include both a category within a multilingual national programme and prizes devoted to English-language books. The best-established examples in current official sources are the Sahitya Akademi Award’s English category and the Atta Galatta–Bangalore Literature Festival Book Prize. They differ in scope, eligibility and categories, so an award year and book category matter as much as the prize name.
Which Indian literary awards recognise books in English?
Two current examples have clearly documented English-language scope:
- Sahitya Akademi Award, English: one language category in a national programme covering 24 languages. It honours a book of literary merit, with English winners recognised across multiple genres.
- Atta Galatta–Bangalore Literature Festival Book Prize: a festival prize with English fiction and nonfiction categories. Its eligibility rules can vary by cycle; the 2026 rules set specific language and publication requirements.
These prizes are not interchangeable. The Akademi’s English award sits within a multilingual annual programme, while the festival prize sets eligibility for its own categories and cycle.
What is the Sahitya Akademi Award for English?
The Sahitya Akademi describes itself as India’s National Academy of Letters. Its programme covers 24 Indian languages, including English, and includes annual awards for literary works as well as awards for translations from and into Indian languages. The institution says the selection process involves a year of scrutiny, discussion and selection. Sahitya Akademi

The award page says the first awards were given in 1955 and states that the award amount has been Rs. 1,00,000 since 2009. That amount is the Akademi’s stated figure for the period beginning in 2009, not a claim about earlier awards. Sahitya Akademi award page
English winners cover more than novels
The official English winners list, titled “Akademi Awards (1955–2025),” includes categories such as novel, poetry, short stories, nonfiction, narrative history and critical analysis. The award therefore offers a route to discover English books beyond fiction. Sahitya Akademi English winners list

What does the Atta Galatta–Bangalore Literature Festival Book Prize cover?
The prize has English fiction and English nonfiction categories. The festival archive says it was instituted in 2015 and records other categories, including popular choice and children’s books. Archive descriptions also mention translations, short-story anthologies and self-published works; because eligibility can change between cycles, those details should not be assumed to apply to every year. Eligibility and timing for the 2026 cycle
The official 2026 rules require an original work in English published in India, or, for e-books, a work by an Indian citizen. The page schedules the winners’ announcement and award ceremony at the festival for 12–13 December 2026. That is a future scheduled date; it does not mean the 2026 winners have been announced. How should you use these awards to find a book?
- Choose the kind of book you want. For the Sahitya Akademi, check the English winners list’s category as well as the title; its selections include poetry and nonfiction as well as novels. For the festival prize, start with its English fiction or nonfiction category.
- Check the award year. A title may be a winner in a particular year, while a festival’s next-cycle schedule is a separate matter. Treat future ceremony dates as scheduled, not completed.
- Read the applicable eligibility rules. For the 2026 festival cycle, the rules distinguish print publication in India from e-books by Indian citizens. Older archive descriptions are not a substitute for current-cycle rules.
- Use the official list or archive to verify the result. The Sahitya Akademi list records winners and categories; the festival archive presents its prize history and category examples.
Why not treat every familiar book prize as a current option?
A prize’s past visibility does not establish that it is currently operating or that its present rules suit a particular book. For the Crossword Book Award, JCB Prize for Literature and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, the current status and rules are not established by the official sources cited here. They should not be presented as active current options on that basis.
