The 138th Rose Parade is scheduled for January 1, 2027, at 8:00 a.m. in Pasadena. Its 5.5-mile procession—floats covered in flowers and other natural materials, marching bands, equestrian units, and Tournament entries—grew from an 1890 festival designed to show off the city’s mild winter climate. The 2027 theme is “Welcome,” according to Visit Pasadena; its detailed visitor guidance still refers to 2026, so confirm current logistics before making plans.
What is the Tournament of Roses Parade?
Usually called the Rose Parade, the Tournament of Roses Parade is an annual New Year’s Day procession in Pasadena, California, organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. The parade travels 5.5 miles and features floral floats, marching bands, equestrian units, and other Tournament entries. It is part of the wider Tournament of Roses celebration, which also includes the Rose Bowl Game.
The event’s scale is visible in the organizer’s figures for the 2025 parade: 39 floats, 24 bands, 16 equestrian units, and seven Tournament Entries. These are the Association’s counts for that year, not a guaranteed lineup for 2027. Its 2025 audience figures, which cite Nielsen’s one-minute qualifier, were 28 million individual viewers and 19 million household viewers across broadcast and streaming. The Association also reported 27 million broadcast viewers and more than 1 million streaming viewers separately; those rounded figures should not be added as exact components of the combined totals.
Why is the Rose Parade held on New Year’s Day?
The tradition began in winter 1890, when Pasadena’s Valley Hunt Club planned a festival to attract attention to the region’s flowers and mild weather. The members added a parade of flower-decorated carriages to the games and festivities. The Tournament’s official history estimates that 3,000 spectators attended that first event.

At a Valley Hunt Club meeting, Professor Charles F. Holder framed the idea as a contrast with winter in the East: “In New York, people are buried in snow,” he said. “Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.” The Tournament’s history page preserves the remark as part of its account of the festival’s origins.
As the event grew beyond what the Valley Hunt Club could manage, the Tournament of Roses Association formed in 1895. The parade added marching bands and motorized floats over time, while keeping its floral identity. The band tradition dates to 1891, when Monrovia’s city band joined the second parade; equestrian participants have been part of the procession since its first year.
How are Rose Parade floats made?
Floats must be covered across every inch with flowers or other natural materials, including leaves, seeds, and bark. Roses are placed individually in small vials of water and then positioned one by one. Most floats are built by professional float companies and take nearly a year to complete; some community-sponsored floats are built by volunteers.
The work behind the parade extends beyond float construction. The Association reports 935 volunteer members working across 31 committees and contributing more than 80,000 volunteer hours annually. Those are the organizer’s figures as presented in its official overview accessed in 2026.

What else will you see along the route?
Bands and equestrian groups give the parade a different rhythm from a float-only procession. According to the Tournament, participating bands have included high-school, college, and military groups, as well as drum and bugle corps, brass bands, percussion groups, and bagpipers. Equestrian units feature a range of horse breeds. The 2025 lineup counts offer a snapshot of the event’s mix, but future participants and totals can change.
When and where is the 2027 Rose Parade?
The Tournament’s event page schedules the 138th Rose Parade for Friday, January 1, 2027, at 8:00 a.m. The route is 5.5 miles long:
- It begins at Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard.
- It travels north on Orange Grove Boulevard.
- It turns east onto Colorado Boulevard.
- It turns north onto Sierra Madre Boulevard and ends at Villa Street.
The Tournament identifies nearby Metro A Line stations and recommends checking Metro or Metrolink for service information. Visit Pasadena lists “Welcome” as the 2027 theme, describing it as a celebration of belonging and community. The same page cautions that its detailed visitor information is still for 2026 and will be updated. Treat that page’s older ticket prices, camping rules, schedules, and lineup details as 2026 information unless confirmed for 2027.

The route is 5.5 miles through Pasadena, from Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard to Villa Street via Colorado Boulevard and Sierra Madre Boulevard. That distance is the parade route, not a recommended walking distance between viewing locations; street closures and crowds can make getting around more complicated on parade day.
Do you need tickets to watch the Rose Parade?
No. Street-level viewing is free, while grandstand seats are ticketed. The official guide describes designated free viewing areas for people with disabilities and their guests; these areas require a space request and are not the same as unrestricted curbside seating. The guide says no seats are provided there. For ticketed seating, the Tournament directs visitors to Sharp Seating for limited wheelchair-accessible grandstand seats.
Rank #4
There are practical differences between the options:
- Free accessible street-level areas: The guide describes three designated locations, including audio description at one and sign-language interpretation at another. Spaces require a request, and seating is not supplied.
- Ticketed grandstands: These provide reserved seats, but ticket availability and entry requirements depend on the current event arrangements. The parade-day guide instructs ticket holders entering the Orange Grove grandstand security zone to arrive by 6:30 a.m. and have their tickets ready.
The 6:30 a.m. instruction and the accessible-area details come from the organizer’s parade-day guide, not a confirmed 2027 visitor update. Check the current guide before relying on them.
What should I bring to the Rose Parade?
What you need depends on where you plan to watch. For the designated free accessible areas, the organizer’s guide says to bring a chair, cushion, or stool because no seating is supplied. A portable cushion may be useful if it suits the site and current rules; do not assume every viewing area permits every kind of seat.
- Keep your ticket available if entering a ticketed grandstand area.
- Check the current item restrictions before bringing anything bulky. The guide bans items that block views or create safety risks.
- For accessible street-level viewing, request a space through the current official process and confirm what the selected location provides.
- Check event-day transit and closure information before setting out, especially if you plan to move between locations.
These details are based on the organizer’s existing guide and may be revised for 2027.
Can you watch the Rose Parade on television or online?
Yes. The Tournament says several U.S. networks broadcast the parade live and directs viewers to its current broadcaster list or local listings. The network schedule is date-sensitive, and the available streaming options may depend on location and service rights, so check the current listing for the 2027 event. The Association reported 40,000 parade program copies in circulation in 2025; that figure does not establish whether a program is currently sold to consumers.
