What made the Ventura unusual when it launched?
Hamilton dates the Ventura’s introduction to 1957 and credits its design to American industrial designer Richard Arbib. The company says it gave Arbib unusual freedom, resulting in an asymmetric, triangular case that departed from conventional watch shapes. That description of the design process is Hamilton’s account.
Hamilton also calls the Ventura the world’s first electric watch. According to the brand, an electromagnetic coil powered it, making the watch a step between mechanical watches and the quartz movement that emerged in the 1960s. Both the superlative and this historical framing come from Hamilton’s official history, rather than an independent assessment.
When did the Ventura first appear in a Hollywood film?
Blue Hawaii and Elvis Presley, 1961
Hamilton says Elvis Presley wore a Ventura in the 1961 musical comedy Blue Hawaii, four years after the watch’s launch. This is the early screen association most closely tied to the model. Hamilton’s published account does not establish the watch’s precise reference number, so a specific modern or vintage variant should not be presented as a confirmed match.

How did the Ventura become associated with Men in Black?
The first film, 1997
Hamilton’s cinema history says Agents J and K, played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, wore the Ventura in the original Men in Black (1997). Swatch Group, Hamilton’s parent company, likewise described the Ventura in a 2019 announcement as part of the franchise’s uniform since 1997. These are corporate accounts of the association; they do not identify the exact prop reference worn in the film.

Hamilton identifies a Ventura on Agent M, played by Tessa Thompson, in Men in Black: International (2019). Swatch Group described that film’s version as having a stainless-steel case, black dial and black leather strap. That description supports the look of the watch associated with this installment, but not an exact retail-reference match.

Hamilton says the Ventura appeared across the franchise’s four sequels and calls it the official watch of the Men in Black film series. That is the brand’s current marketing description. It should not be taken to mean every film used the same model or prop.

Hamilton presents Ventura Quartz among its current products. A present-day product and a screen-used watch are different kinds of evidence: the current listing establishes that the collection includes a quartz Ventura, but the cited film accounts do not establish that a retail reference is identical to the watch worn by Elvis, Agents J or K, or Agent M. The exact Blue Hawaii reference is also not specified in those accounts.

Hamilton says its watches have appeared in more than 500 movies and television shows. The company’s undated history pages, accessed in 2026, do not provide a counting method or independent audit, so the number is best understood as Hamilton’s own figure. The brand describes its cinema history as more than 90 years and cites Shanghai Express (1932) as its first screen appearance.
