“The Wrangler” takes Fallout into the New Vegas Strip and turns Lucy and the Ghoul’s uneasy partnership into an open betrayal. Its mix of grotesque danger, black comedy and personal fallout gives the episode momentum, while Hank’s memory device deepens the series’ questions about family and control without resolving the larger conspiracy.
Spoilers for Fallout season 2, episode 5 follow.
Episode details
Prime Video lists the fifth episode as “The Wrangler,” with the synopsis “Big Whoop” and a runtime of 57 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes gives its release date as January 14, 2026. Watch on Prime Video; availability depends on territory and subscription status.
The episode’s destination is the New Vegas Strip, a setting that brings the franchise’s famously strange and violent world into the foreground. The show’s official season description calls the post-apocalyptic world “incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent”; here, that tonal mix is less backdrop than a pressure test for Lucy and the Ghoul.
What happens in “The Wrangler”
In PC Gamer’s recap, Lucy and the Ghoul encounter three deathclaws on the Strip and choose to avoid a fight. Lucy searches for Addictol, meets a shopkeeper who turns out to be a fake, and kills him after finding the real Sonny. Meanwhile, Hank tests a device capable of erasing memory.

Hank uses the safety of the Ghoul’s family as leverage. Under that pressure, the Ghoul incapacitates Lucy. She fights back and knocks him out of a window; Hank then finds her. The immediate conflict is personal, but it also puts the larger Vault-Tec story in sharper relief.
Lucy and the Ghoul’s partnership breaks under pressure
The episode’s strongest turn is the Ghoul’s decision to act against Lucy when his family is threatened. His desperation is understandable, but the choice still makes their arrangement harder to trust. For Lucy, the betrayal tests whether she can hold on to her moral code in a world where survival repeatedly demands compromise.

The rupture gives their journey real consequence: they are no longer simply two wary companions moving toward a shared destination. “The Wrangler” makes the conflict effective by tying it to a specific pressure point rather than treating betrayal as a sudden twist without motivation. Lucy’s violent response also keeps the scene from reducing her to a passive victim of the Ghoul’s decision.
Hank’s device makes memory part of the power struggle
A machine that can erase memory gives the Vault-Tec plot a direct connection to the episode’s family conflict. Memory is not merely a record of what happened; it becomes something a powerful person may try to control. That idea fits the show’s recurring interest in corporate power, identity and the ways family bonds can be used as leverage.

The episode raises the stakes around Hank’s actions, but the device alone does not explain the full Vault-Tec conspiracy or establish the limits of his plans. It is a troubling new piece of the story, not a complete answer.
New Vegas sharpens the show’s tonal contrast
The Strip supplies both spectacle and scarcity: even with familiar landmarks and franchise lore around them, the characters’ immediate needs remain practical and dangerous. Avoiding the deathclaws is an absurdly matter-of-fact response to a monstrous threat; Lucy’s search for Addictol and her encounter with the false shopkeeper pull the story back toward desperate survival.

That swing from dark humor to violence and heartbreak is a strength when it stays rooted in character. The A.V. Club’s William Hughes described the storytelling as reaching “a new acceleration point” as flashback clues accumulate, and praised the series’ economy in moving past scenes that other shows might over-explain. Rotten Tomatoes’ excerpt of its review similarly described the series as pivoting “between absurdity and heartbreak.” Those are critics’ assessments, not a guarantee that every tonal shift will work for every viewer.
Newcomers do not need to know the games to follow Lucy, the Ghoul or Hank’s conflict. For returning fans, the Strip’s appearance carries the added pleasure of seeing a landmark location from Fallout: New Vegas, the 2010 game, enter the series’ story. The setting enriches the episode without making its emotional stakes dependent on game knowledge.

Who dropped the bombs in Fallout season 2?
“The Wrangler” leaves the question unresolved. GamesRadar+’s contemporary explainer discusses a possible culprit but notes that the television series has not directly confirmed who dropped the bombs. Any answer based on the scene remains an interpretation or theory, not established show canon. The episode offers a reason to keep asking the question, not a definitive solution.
How critics received the episode
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from seven critic reviews on its episode page as of October 8, 2026. That is a snapshot of a small critic sample, not an audience score or a stable measure of opinion. The cited critical response highlights the episode’s brisk storytelling and tonal range, while the more useful test for viewers is whether its character rupture and new clues feel earned rather than merely busy.
