In 2024, former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki’s family suffered two separate losses. Her 19-year-old son, Marco Troper, died at UC Berkeley in February. Wojcicki died in August after living with lung cancer. The circumstances of the two deaths were different, and the official cause of Marco’s death was still under investigation in the contemporaneous account.
What happened to Susan Wojcicki’s son?
Marco Troper, a 19-year-old UC Berkeley freshman, was found unresponsive on campus on a Tuesday afternoon in February 2024 and later pronounced dead by emergency responders. The Associated Press reported that he was found at the university’s Clark Kerr Campus on February 13; the AP account was published February 18.
UC Berkeley said there were no signs of foul play. At the time of the AP report, the Alameda County coroner’s office was investigating and would determine the cause of death. The report identified Troper as Susan Wojcicki’s son and Esther Wojcicki’s grandson. Read the Associated Press account.
Some early coverage described the death as an apparent drug overdose, attributing that description to his grandmother’s account and other media reports. That wording was not the same as an official coroner’s finding: the contemporaneous AP report said the cause remained for the coroner to determine. TechCrunch’s February 18 report used the attributed phrase while also noting the university’s statement and ongoing investigation.

How did Susan Wojcicki die?
YouTube announced on August 10, 2024, that Wojcicki had died after living with lung cancer for two years. The announcement came from Google CEO Sundar Pichai in an official YouTube post, which also included a tribute from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. YouTube’s August 10 announcement and tributes.
A post written by Wojcicki and published by YouTube after her death said she was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of 2022. She wrote that she had almost no symptoms, had never smoked, and stepped down as YouTube CEO to focus on her health and family. What is known about the family’s losses?
The public record in these contemporaneous accounts establishes the basic chronology: Marco died in February, and Susan Wojcicki died in August after living with lung cancer. It does not establish that the deaths had a shared cause. Esther Wojcicki publicly mourned her grandson; the AP quoted her describing Marco as “the most kind, loving, smart, fun and beautiful human being” and writing that his “life was cut too short.” Those words were hers, not a description of private family experience beyond what she chose to share.
In YouTube’s August announcement, Pichai called Wojcicki a “teammate, mentor, and friend.” The company’s tribute also recognized her work at Google and YouTube and her advocacy for parental leave and education. These statements offer public remembrances, not a complete account of how the family experienced its grief.
