Those figures measure peak concurrent players on Steam over a short window, not everyone playing across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
What the 200% Fallout player count figure measures
Insider Gaming compared Steam peak player counts from April 10 to April 13, 2024, shortly after the Fallout TV series premiered on April 10. The percentage was calculated from Fallout 3’s increase from 813 to 2,501 peak concurrent players. It is a specific title, platform, metric, and date range—not a franchise-wide count. Insider Gaming’s April 13 report gives the original comparison.
How the other Fallout games changed in the same report
The same April 10–13 Steam snapshot showed increases for two other games. The values below are reported peaks, not total unique players:
| Game | Steam peak on April 10, 2024 | Steam peak by April 13, 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Fallout 3 | 813 | 2,501 |
| Fallout 4 | 18,000 | 43,000 |
| Fallout 76 | 10,000 | 19,161 |
These are Steam concurrent-player peaks in Insider Gaming’s April 13, 2024 report. They do not count a player more than once across sessions or combine activity across platforms.

Why later reports give different numbers
A later report used a later snapshot rather than disputing the April 13 figures. Game Developer reported April 14 Steam peaks of about 83,500 for Fallout 4, 39,455 for Fallout 76, and 19,300 for Fallout: New Vegas. The date and measurement snapshot differ, so those figures should not be treated as replacements for the April 10–13 comparison. Game Developer’s April 15 report also notes that console numbers were harder to pin down, particularly on Xbox because of Game Pass.
A separate NRG chart looked at percentage gains across April, using SteamCharts data accurate as of April 30, 2024. It listed concurrent-player increases of 300% for Fallout 4, 302% for Fallout 76, 331% for Fallout: New Vegas, and 467% for Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition. The chart also listed active-player gains—44,311, 19,788, 11,081, and 2,880 respectively. These monthly figures use a different time frame and include an active-player measure, so they are not interchangeable with a three-day peak comparison. NRG’s May 2024 report provides the chart and its data-date note.

Did the Fallout show boost game players?
The timing supports an association: the series premiered April 10, 2024, and Steam peaks rose soon after. But the available figures do not establish that the show alone caused the increases. Insider Gaming also pointed to Fallout 4’s next-generation update and an update for Fallout 76; contemporaneous coverage also described free-play and promotional activity. Multiple events overlapped with the premiere.
Steam numbers cannot answer how many people were playing on every platform. The reports do not provide a unified count spanning Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Game Pass, and the console figures are particularly difficult to compare with Steam counts.

What the figures say—and do not say—about Fallout’s popularity
The reports document a pronounced short-term rise in Steam activity across several games after the series launched. They do not establish a current player count, an all-platform total, or how many people started playing specifically because they watched the show. Todd Howard was later reported by Game Developer as describing a “4-6x increase” in daily players, depending on the game; that is a reported remark, not a platform-wide audited count. Game Developer’s coverage attributes the comment to Howard.

If the show has prompted you to try the games, the available counts do not indicate which title is best for you. For Fallout 4, Steam’s official digital listing confirms a Game of the Year Edition that includes the base game and six official expansions. That listing confirms digital content, not the availability of a physical copy or current stock elsewhere. See Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition on Steam.
