He has not provided a verified public translation of every shape in the design, so its meaning is best understood through his own broad description—not a symbol-by-symbol decoding.
What does Roman Reigns’ tattoo mean?
Reigns told Inked, “For me, [the tattoo] represents our culture.” He explained that it represents “our people, our bloodline, within the wrestling world and just our family in general.” Those are his personal words about his own tattoo, not a universal definition of Samoan or Polynesian tattoo designs.
WWE has also described it as a traditional Samoan tattoo and published a Superstar Ink segment about why it matters to him. Together, these accounts support the broad themes of heritage, family, and belonging; they do not establish a complete glossary for each motif.
How the tattoo developed
According to a 2020 Samoa Observer report, Reigns first got a tattoo on his right shoulder as a teenager. It was later extended along his right arm, down his back, and toward the center of his chest. This describes the tattoo’s development as reported in 2020; it is not an exhaustive account of any later changes.

The same report attributes a 17-hour duration for the work on his right arm to its underlying Essentially Sports account. That is a reported time, not an independently verified measurement.
Who is Roman Reigns’ tattoo artist?
Inked reported that Reigns visited tattoo artist Michael Fatutoa, known as Samoan Mike, and added work to his back in 2020. The report does not establish that Fatutoa created every part of the larger tattoo.

What is the small turtle tattoo on his wrist?
The Samoa Observer reported that a small turtle on Reigns’ wrist represents his daughter Joelle, attributing the detail to Reigns. That meaning is reported secondhand in the article, which summarizes an Essentially Sports interview; it should be treated as an attributed personal detail rather than an independently verified interpretation.

- Supported: Reigns has connected the large tattoo to Samoan culture, family, and the people and bloodline he represents.
- Reported detail: The shoulder piece grew into a larger design across his arm, back, and chest; the turtle is reported to represent his daughter.
- Not established: A reliable, complete explanation of every shape, or a definitive inventory of the tattoo’s present-day design.
Samoan and other Polynesian traditions are not interchangeable. Reigns’ account is useful for understanding what his own tattoo means to him, but it should not be used as a template for interpreting other people’s tattoos or for assigning a fixed meaning to every similar-looking motif.
