No—not as a confirmed couple in the original Fairy Tail ending. Chapter 545 closes with Natsu and Lucy setting off with their friends on another adventure, not with a confession or a stated relationship. Creator Hiro Mashima was reported to prefer Natsu and Lucy as a pairing, but he also said he chose to leave Natsu’s romantic situation without a concrete outcome.
What happens to Natsu and Lucy in the final chapter?
In the chapter 545 epilogue, Lucy has received recognition for her writing and thanks Natsu for what he has done for her. Natsu tells her that their application for the 100-year quest has been approved, and the team heads into its next adventure. The final chapter’s available synopsis describes a close bond and a shared future as teammates, but no romantic declaration or confirmed couple status. The chapter synopsis is fan-maintained, so the narrow conclusion is the safest one: the described ending does not confirm a romance.

What did Hiro Mashima say about the pairing?
In a February 10, 2019 report about a French convention Q&A, ComicBook.com quoted Mashima saying, “I had imagined a triangular relationship between Natsu, Lisanna, and Lucy. It was my intention.” The report also quoted him explaining, “Because of this, I thought to myself that the simplest thing would be for Natsu to remain as is so that nothing concrete happens.” He added, “I feel that the Natsu and Lucy ship is more suitable.” ComicBook.com’s account is a secondary report, not an official transcript. It supports the distinction between Mashima’s stated preference and what the manga actually confirms: he considered Natsu and Lucy suitable, while leaving the story without a concrete romantic outcome.
Is there more story after the original ending?
Yes. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is the official sequel, with Hiro Mashima credited for its story and layouts; Natsu, Lucy, and the guild return. Kodansha US describes the sequel and its returning characters, and Kodansha Japan’s catalog says it continues from chapter 545. Kodansha US currently lists the series as ongoing and offers Volume 1 in print and digital editions: see the publisher’s series listing.

The publisher’s ongoing-series information establishes that the story continues; it does not establish a final romantic outcome. An official Weekly Shonen Magazine announcement dated April 8, 2026 separately announced a short 20th-anniversary serialization beginning with issue 35, released July 29, 2026. That announcement does not confirm a romantic resolution for Natsu and Lucy.

These are three different kinds of evidence. The original manga’s ending does not make Natsu and Lucy a confirmed couple. Mashima’s reported comments indicate that he personally found the pairing more suitable, while also explaining why he left Natsu’s romantic status unresolved. Fans may read their closeness, trust, and teamwork as signs that a romance is plausible, but those readings are interpretation rather than an official relationship status.
