The site says it began in September 2016. Those are the site’s own descriptions; its claim to be a “leading source” is promotional, not independently established by the sources cited here.
What is Fakaza?
Fakaza.com says it was founded in September 2016, as South African music was gaining a wider international audience. Its about page describes its focus as new urban releases by South African musicians and names Hip Hop, Gqom, Kwaito and Afro House among the genres it covers. Fakaza’s about page also says “Fakaza” is a Zulu word with several meanings, including testify, witness, prove and attest. These statements describe how the website presents itself; they are not independent assessments of its catalogue or reach.

The same page calls Fakaza a “leading source” for South African music. That is the site’s promotional wording. The sources cited here do not provide independent audience or market-share evidence to verify a leadership claim.
Does a Fakaza listing mean a track is authorized for download?
No conclusion about a particular recording’s permission follows just from its appearance on a website. The South African Government describes the Copyright Act 98 of 1978 as legislation intended “to regulate copyright and to provide for matters incidental thereto.” Whether a specific track may be downloaded or redistributed depends on the rights and permissions applicable to that recording and use; the sources cited here do not establish the status of Fakaza’s catalogue as a whole.

Music rights can involve more than one kind of protected material. SAMRO says it administers performance rights for members who are composers, authors and publishers. SAMPRA says it administers Needletime Rights on behalf of recording artists and record labels. These are distinct roles relating broadly to musical works and sound recordings. For a specific permission or licensing question, consult the relevant rights organization or rights holder.
How does Fakaza fit into South Africa’s digital music landscape?
Digital platforms are an important part of South Africa’s music economy, but the available figures are dated. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s May 2024 strategy cites a 2023 industry report stating that CDs made up less than 10% of music revenues, vinyl less than 1%, and USB sales 2%. Its Figure 9 shows digital platforms at 90% of the revenue split in 2022, with physical formats at 10%. These are figures for the periods and categories reported, not measurements of the market today. The department’s strategy discusses Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and other platforms in this context.
RiSA’s description of The Official South African Charts says the initiative initially aggregates digital streaming data from Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer, which RiSA describes as platforms used by local audiences. That establishes a role for those services in the chart’s stated methodology; it does not mean every South African artist or release is available on each one.

The right route depends on the particular track and what you want to do with it. A listing on a discovery site and access through a licensed streaming service are not interchangeable guarantees: check the terms and permissions for the specific recording and intended use.
Rank #3
- Check the release: Search for the artist and exact track or album on the service you plan to use. Availability can vary by release and region.
- Check the listening mode: If you need offline listening, confirm that the service offers it for your account and the release. Offline access does not, by itself, grant permission to redistribute a recording.
- Check regional terms: Availability and account terms can vary by country. Review the service’s current terms rather than assuming access is identical everywhere.
- Separate discovery from permission: Finding a track on a site can help identify a release, but it does not establish permission to download, share or reuse it.
The sources cited here do not compare current platform prices, sound quality or catalogue completeness, so they do not support ranking services on those grounds.
