Fakaza is a website that presents itself as a source for South African music releases, including Amapiano, Gqom, Kwaito, Hip Hop and Afro House. Its own account says it launched in September 2016 as South African music was growing worldwide. That explains how the site describes its purpose; it does not show that Fakaza caused, or represents the whole of, South African music’s international visibility.

What is Fakaza?

Fakaza describes itself as a platform for South African music and says it was founded in September 2016, following the growth of South African music worldwide. This history comes from Fakaza’s About page, so it is the site’s own account rather than independent verification of its reach or influence.

The distinction matters: a website can help listeners find releases without being the source of a broader musical movement. South African music’s international profile has cultural and industry contexts beyond any single platform.

What kind of music is on Fakaza?

Fakaza’s About page names Hip Hop, Gqom, Kwaito and Afro House among the genres it publishes. Its homepage also prominently features Amapiano and other styles. These labels describe the site’s current positioning, not a complete map of South African music; its catalogue and featured genres can change.

For discovery, look at the individual artist and release information as well as the genre tag. A genre label can help you navigate, but it does not establish who made a recording or whether a particular copy is authorized.

Why is South African music popular around the world?

South African music’s international visibility is better understood as a wider cultural development than as the result of one website. South African government publications discuss Amapiano as part of the country’s cultural presence abroad. They provide official context for the global framing, but do not establish that Fakaza drove that visibility.

A Department of Sport, Arts and Culture music strategy reports that Spotify recorded “nearly 2 billion streams in the past year” for Amapiano, with 143% growth compared with 2021. The strategy is reporting Spotify’s figure; the passage does not make the measurement window for “the past year” clear. It should therefore be read as a reported historical indicator, not as a current annual count or a measure of all South African music.

What is Amapiano?

Amapiano is a South African music genre that government publications identify as part of the country’s cultural presence abroad. Fakaza features it alongside other genres on its homepage. That pairing can make the site a route to discovery, but a homepage selection is not a definitive account of the genre’s history, sound or full community of artists.

Is it legal to download music from Fakaza?

There is not enough information to answer that for every track or access route. Whether downloading a particular recording is lawful depends on the rights in that recording and whether the relevant artist, label or rights holder has authorized the source and use. A site name or genre listing alone does not establish permission.

SAMRO’s general guidance explains that music creators can be entitled to royalties when their works are used in licensed settings, including digital streaming contexts. This is broad information about rights and licensing, not a ruling on Fakaza or any individual track. For background, see SAMRO’s licensing information.

A separate Google Play listing for a Fakaza-branded app says its tracks stream through Jamendo’s API and describes them as Creative Commons licensed. Those are claims in the listing by its developer, ADVIZZO LTD. The listing does not establish that the app is affiliated with fakaza.com, and it does not independently verify the rights status of every track. Do not treat the app listing as proof about the main website, or vice versa.

How to listen and support the artists

If a release interests you, check the artist’s or label’s official pages for the authorized listening or download options. Before downloading, look for clear information about the recording source and permission; if that information is absent or unclear, choose a source the artist or rights holder identifies. Following the original artist also helps you find release details and related work beyond any one platform.
