Warner Bros. Games announced on February 25, 2025, that it was closing Monolith Productions and two other studios, and that Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game would not move forward. Monolith was based in Kirkland, Washington, in the Seattle area. GeekWire reported that 131 workers were laid off, citing a Washington state filing.
What happened to Monolith Productions?
Warner Bros. Games said it was closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego as part of a strategic change in how it structures its studios and invests in franchises including Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The company said the decision was not a reflection on the affected teams or their talent. Its February 25, 2025 statement, reproduced by Gematsu, said: “This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”
Was the Wonder Woman game cancelled?
Yes. Warner Bros. Games explicitly said: “The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will not move forward.” The project was cancelled; the company did not announce that it was merely delayed or transferred to another studio.
Monolith announced the game in 2021, but public details about its design and release plans remained limited. The Los Angeles Times reported, citing people familiar with the project, that it had been rebooted, changed directors in early 2024, cost more than $100 million, and was still years from release. Those development and cost details were attributed reporting, not a budget or schedule disclosed by Warner Bros.

How many people were laid off in the Seattle area?
GeekWire reported that 131 workers were laid off at Monolith, based on a Washington state filing. Monolith was located in Kirkland, east of Seattle. The 131 figure comes from GeekWire’s account of that filing, not from Warner Bros. Games’ closure announcement.
What was Monolith Productions known for?
Founded in 1994, Monolith was acquired by Warner Bros. in 2004. Its releases included the F.E.A.R. series and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. GeekWire described Shadow of Mordor, released in 2014, as the studio’s biggest mainstream hit; its Nemesis System made enemies recur and develop into rivals. The Los Angeles Times also characterized the game as critically acclaimed.
The closure ends the work of a studio associated with those released games as well as the cancelled Wonder Woman project. Shadow of Mordor remains a released game; the Wonder Woman game does not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a later Wonder Woman film reference mean the game is back?
No. Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 7, 2025 shareholder letter referred to “the next Wonder Woman” among DC film projects in preparation. That is a separate film reference, not an announcement that Monolith’s cancelled video game has been revived. The letter describes plans and does not guarantee the film’s release.
