There is no single, universally scheduled “Krampusnacht Festival”: events are organized locally, and Salzburg’s 2026 listings include several separate Krampus and Perchten appearances on different dates.
What is Krampusnacht?
Krampus is a frightening companion to Saint Nicholas in Alpine tradition. Around December 6, Saint Nicholas is associated with gifts, while Krampus is portrayed as a threatening figure carrying chains and a switch. Public Krampus runs bring the character into the streets through costumed performers wearing carved masks and shaggy pelts, often with bells.
The name “Krampusnacht” is commonly used for the night associated with Krampus, but it should not be taken to mean there is one official festival shared by every Alpine town. The date, format and name of an event depend on its local organizers.
What happens at a Krampus parade?
A Krampus run is a public procession or performance featuring masked figures moving through a town. Tourism Salzburg describes wooden masks, shaggy fur, curved horns and heavy bells, along with growling and stamping. It characterizes the figures as being said to scare away winter’s dark spirits; that is a tourism-board description, not proof of a single historical origin.

The atmosphere is deliberately eerie, but the exact program and audience arrangements differ by event. The official Salzburg listings cited here do not set out spectator crowd-control rules. Follow the organizer’s instructions and choose a viewing position that works for your group.
Krampus and Perchten: what is the difference?
Krampus and Perchten are related figures in Alpine winter pageantry, but traditional descriptions distinguish them. Krampus is linked with Saint Nicholas around December 6. Salzburg tourism associates Perchten with the Rauhnächte, the period between the winter solstice and Epiphany.

- Brand new Officially Licensed Krampus Krampus Mask
- Great accessory for any Adult Krampus Krampus costume
- This posting includes: Krampus mask as featured
- Please note that only the items listed above are included.
In contemporary practice, the distinction has blurred: Perchten events also take place during December, and some groups combine the figures under the name “Krampusperchten.” A listing for a Perchten run is therefore not simply another name for a Krampus event; check the event’s own description to understand what it presents.
When is Krampusnacht in Salzburg?
There is no single date for every Salzburg-area event. For Salzburg city, the 2026 listings show multiple appearances rather than one all-purpose festival. The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt’s official event listing gives these times:

- We wish it was a silent night! A mythical being watches the children of the world to see if they are naughty or nice throughout the year. Then on one special day in winter, travels to pay them all a visit and repay them for their behavior

- Date and start time: Pick the specific performance that fits your plans, then verify its current schedule.
- Town and venue: “Salzburg” can refer to different places and organizers; confirm the event’s exact location.
- Type of appearance: Check whether the listing says Krampus run, Perchten run, or a combined appearance.
- Children’s program: Look for an explicitly identified children’s appearance rather than assuming every run is designed for young spectators.
Planning around the Salzburg Christmas market
The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt lists its 2026 season as November 19, 2026, through January 1, 2027. Its opening hours vary by weekday and holiday, so check the market’s published opening hours for the day you plan to visit. Market opening times do not replace the separate start time or venue details for a Krampus or Perchten event.

Tourism Salzburg says the Gastein Perchten tradition has been listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2011. This designation refers to the Gastein Perchten tradition; it should not be extended to every Krampus parade or winter event. See Tourism Salzburg’s overview of Perchten traditions.

How widespread is the custom?
Tourism Salzburg describes around 200 local Pässe—groups or associations—in Salzburg. The page does not state a publication date or counting method, so the figure is approximate rather than a current audited total. It helps illustrate the local-group character of the tradition, but does not establish attendance or the number of events across the Alpine region.
For context on the figures and traditions described here, consult Tourism Salzburg’s Krampus overview and its Perchten overview. Those sources describe Salzburg customs; they are not a definitive calendar or account of every Alpine region.
