Partly: John Romero’s canceled shooter has continued in a smaller, redesigned form, but there is no confirmation that the original game is returning unchanged. Romero Games lost funding for the unnamed project in summer 2025 and said it was canceled. Later comments described reusing some of its work in a reduced-scope project; the latest dated report, from March 2026, said that project was in development.

What happened to Romero Games’ shooter?

In summer 2025, Romero Games said funding for its unnamed shooter had been withdrawn and the game was canceled. The studio said it was still operating and looking for a way forward. It did not identify the publisher, citing confidentiality. Contemporaneous reporting identified Microsoft as the likely publisher, but the studio did not confirm that attribution. GamesRadar+ reported on the studio’s statement.

The project was not publicly titled in the reports reviewed. Gamereactor listed it as a Romero Games FPS, with PC as the listed platform and its release date marked TBA; that listing does not establish the platform or release timing of the redesigned project. Gamereactor’s interview and project listing.

Why Romero said there was a path forward

In an interview published October 28, 2025, Romero said the studio retained the project’s intellectual property and code, and that several companies were interested in working with the team. He said development was “about midway” through. The remarks were made to Gamereactor at San Diego Comic Con Malaga.

Romero also used “say, $50 million” to describe the value of the work and assets in a hypothetical arrangement with another company. That was an illustrative figure, not a confirmed project budget or audited valuation. His point was that retained assets could help a partner continue the work—or help the studio build something new more quickly.

What “back” means now

By December 2025, Romero’s account had shifted from exploring options to continuing work in a smaller, redesigned form that incorporated elements from the earlier project. That supports describing the game’s work as reused and reshaped; it does not establish that the original shooter was restored exactly as planned. GameSpot reported on the redesigned iteration.

In March 2026, ScreenHub reported that John and Brenda Romero discussed an unnamed project in development at reduced scope. The reporting reviewed does not establish a final title, publisher, current platform, or release date. ScreenHub’s March 31, 2026 report.

What remains uncertain

  • Whether a new publisher has formally signed on.
  • How much of the original game’s code, design, or other material carries over beyond the reported use of elements from it.
  • What the redesigned game will be called, which platforms it will target, and when it may be released.

As of the March 2026 report, there was no named consumer release to buy or preorder. The clearest description is that the canceled shooter’s work helped inform a smaller project that Romero Games was developing—not that the canceled game had returned intact.
