What happened to the Andrea Doria?
The Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria sank on July 25–26, 1956, after colliding with the Swedish liner Stockholm. A June 2016 GeekWire report by Alan Boyle said 51 people died, including 46 aboard Andrea Doria, while 1,660 people were rescued. Why is it called the “Everest of shipwrecks”?
“Mount Everest of scuba diving” is a nickname reported for the Andrea Doria, not a formal classification. The comparison points to the challenge of reaching and exploring the wreck. GeekWire described turbid water and limited bottom time for divers, conditions that make a visit demanding and leave little time to inspect the site.
The same report counted 16 divers who had died while exploring the wreck as of its June 2016 publication. That is a historical figure, not a current fatality total. It underscores why the wreck’s reputation should not be mistaken for an invitation or a measure of safety.

What did the 2016 expedition find?
OceanGate’s five-person Cyclops 1 submersible surveyed the site for Argus Expeditions. The team gathered two-dimensional and three-dimensional sonar scans, video and still photographs. The expedition had planned ten dives but completed three; high waves and heavy fog curtailed the work.
As GeekWire reported the expedition’s findings, sonar images showed substantial deterioration, and a large section of the bow appeared to have broken off. These are observations attributed to that 2016 survey, not a later independent inspection or a confirmed account of the wreck’s present state.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush described the reported structural decay as “Imagine it as a collapsing cave,” and added: “Once the cave loses its basic structure, it deteriorates very quickly.” GeekWire quoted Rush through the Boston Globe. The analogy explains the concern about a deteriorating structure; it does not establish how the wreck has changed since the survey.
Is the wreck still intact, and is it safe to dive?
The 2016 report suggests it was already deteriorating, including apparent damage to the bow, but the available account does not establish the Andrea Doria’s condition today. It also does not establish that diving there is safe. In 2016, the site was described as having turbid water and restricted bottom time, and the report gave a then-current tally of diver deaths. Those hazards make the wreck a serious technical challenge, not a routine dive destination. Anyone considering a dive would need current, qualified guidance and a site-specific risk assessment; this historical account is not a safety evaluation.

How did sonar mapping differ from a diver’s view?
Scuba divers at the wreck faced limited visibility and restricted time on the bottom, according to the 2016 report. Cyclops 1, by contrast, gathered sonar scans alongside video and still images. Those tools let the expedition document broader structural features, including the reported bow damage, without treating a diver’s brief, obscured view as a complete picture of the site.
GeekWire said mapping was intended to resume the following year, but the account available here does not verify whether that happened. It likewise does not provide a current sonar dataset or a later condition assessment.
