Since playing George “Pornstache” Mendez on Orange Is the New Black, Pablo Schreiber has moved among fantasy, legal drama, true crime and science-fiction action. His most prominent turns include Mad Sweeney in American Gods, Allan Gore in Candy and Master Chief in Halo. Schreiber has said he wanted to avoid being typecast and keep taking on different kinds of work.
Why Schreiber kept changing roles
Schreiber has described his career choices as a response to the risk of being pigeonholed. In a 2022 Men’s Health interview, he recalled that after Orange Is the New Black and Law & Order: SVU, the idea of him as a “bad guy” seemed close to taking hold. He said it took a deliberate effort to pursue something different.

“That’s always been my mantra: Don’t repeat yourself, don’t repeat yourself,” Schreiber said. He described wanting a career marked by “a really wide variety of work.” That is his explanation of his approach, not proof that every role was chosen as a deliberate departure.
His notable roles after Pornstache
Fantasy: Mad Sweeney in American Gods
Schreiber played Mad Sweeney in American Gods, a fantasy series based on Neil Gaiman’s novel. The role moved him from the contemporary prison setting of Orange Is the New Black into a mythic world. The reviewed Filmstarts filmography lists the credit.

#1 Best Overall
Legal drama: Neal Logiudice in Defending Jacob
In the 2020 miniseries Defending Jacob, Schreiber played Neal Logiudice. The legal drama added another kind of supporting role to his screen work, distinct from the larger genre leads that followed.
Science-fiction action: Master Chief in Halo
Schreiber took the lead as John-117, better known as Master Chief, in Halo, the television adaptation of the video-game franchise. The role required a major physical commitment: in a Guardian interview, Schreiber described weapons training, learning the franchise’s lore and preparing physically. He called it “the toughest physical challenge of my career.”
Rank #2
The Guardian also covered his comments on the game’s fanbase and the choices involved in adapting a familiar franchise for television. The series put him at the center of science-fiction action, a very different setting and character scale from his later work in Candy.
True crime: Allan Gore in Candy
In the true-crime miniseries Candy, Schreiber played Allan Gore, a suburban husband. He discussed making the project while also working on Halo, describing the contrast between the two roles as a highlight. The distinction is sharp: Master Chief is a military hero in a science-fiction story, while Allan Gore belongs to a dramatization of a real-life crime. Schreiber’s remarks about the contrast appear in the Men’s Health interview and a New York Times interview.

Other film and television credits
The Filmstarts catalog also lists Schreiber in the films The King’s Daughter, The Devil Has a Name and Lorelei. These are selected credits, not a complete accounting of his filmography.
For later work, Filmstarts lists Halo season 2 in 2024, a single-episode appearance as Hank “Dash” Dashnaw in The Terminal List: Dark Wolf in 2025, and a 2025 credit as Savick in Motor City. These are catalog listings; they should not be read as independently confirmed announcements of release or availability.

What connects the roles
The roles span different genres and levels of prominence: Mad Sweeney in fantasy, Neal Logiudice in a legal miniseries, Master Chief as the central figure in an action adaptation, and Allan Gore in a true-crime drama. Schreiber’s own stated through-line is variety: after worrying that audiences might associate him chiefly with villains, he sought opportunities that would keep him from repeating the same kind of performance.
