When and where did George Takei and Brad Altman marry?
They married on September 14, 2008, at the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Takei explained to Discover Nikkei why they chose the venue: “The fact that Brad and I could get married is a product of our democracy.”
In its September 15, 2008, report, CBS News said that Takei’s Star Trek co-stars Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig attended and that Altman had planned much of the wedding. The report was published while California voters were still due to decide Proposition 8, a proposed state constitutional amendment opposing same-sex marriage. That was the political context at the time of the wedding, not a statement of the couple’s present legal status.

Their vows offer a first-person glimpse of the relationship they described. Takei promised: “I vow to care for you as you’ve cared for me, cherish you with all my heart, and love you as my husband and the only man in my life.” Altman wrote: “I can add “my husband” to the list of things I call you.” Both quotations are preserved on the couple’s wedding page.
Takei’s vows also thanked Brad for helping care for his mother when she became ill. CBS’s wedding report described Altman as Takei’s mother’s primary caregiver during the final years of her life. The detail is a specific account of family support, rather than a basis for making assumptions about other parts of their private life. In the CBS report, Altman put their bond simply: “We are family.”

How did marriage equality shape their story?
Takei publicly came out as gay in October 2005, at age 68, and went on to advocate for LGBTQ+ equality and marriage rights, according to his official biography. In a Smithsonian interview transcript, he described becoming angry after then-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a marriage-equality bill and deciding to speak publicly. The Smithsonian transcript connects that decision to the state’s debate over marriage rights.
For Takei, the couple’s choice of the Democracy Forum carried a public meaning as well as a personal one: he told Discover Nikkei that their ability to marry was a product of democracy. Their 2008 wedding therefore took place amid an active political fight over same-sex marriage in California; the couple’s own explanation of the venue makes clear why that setting mattered to them.
