She has described it as a more free-flowing record shaped by touring, new musical influences and the communal spirit of dance music—not a repeat of the formula behind Future Nostalgia.
What does “Radical Optimism” mean?
Lipa connected the title to euphoria and togetherness. In an Associated Press interview, she described dance music as a place people can gather and feel safe: “Dance music has such a long history of creating such a safe space. And I just want to embody that.” The title, in her account, points to an outlook that can be shared—not simply private positivity.

The Associated Press also read the cover image—a calm figure in the ocean with a shark nearby—as a visual metaphor for finding and protecting peace in dangerous waters. That is the publication’s interpretation of the image, rather than an explanation attributed to Lipa. The Guardian connected the title to patience and interpreted “Happy for You” as a song about finding happiness for an ex-partner; those, too, are the outlet’s readings.
How did touring and new influences shape the sound?
Lipa told the Associated Press that touring changed what she wanted to make. She named trip-hop and Britpop as influences and said she had developed an interest in live instrumentation. The album followed Future Nostalgia, which she described as a polished pop-dance-disco record; for the new album, she wanted room to experiment while retaining her pop instincts.

“It didn’t have a formula, per se, but I always had that pop sensibility in the back of my mind,” she told the Associated Press. The outlet describes the resulting sound as psychedelic electro-pop, pointing to unusual synth textures, vocal range and dance breaks, as well as connections to UK rave culture, Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Those genre labels and comparisons are the AP’s descriptions, not a list of genres Lipa herself used.
Who helped make the album?
Kevin Parker of Tame Impala was a crucial collaborator. Lipa told the Associated Press she had wanted to work with him since around the time of her first album. TIME’s 2024 interview also identifies Parker as a producer and names Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle and Tobias Jesso Jr. as part of the close creative team.
Official Charts reports that sessions began in earnest in 2021 while Lipa was touring Future Nostalgia. Its account says the work began to click after she met Parker and Harle in June 2022, with Ailin and Jesso Jr. also involved as co-writers. Official Charts identifies “Illusion” as an important breakthrough in the process.
How does it compare with Future Nostalgia?
The contrast Lipa drew was about both sound and method. She described Future Nostalgia as polished pop-dance-disco, while Radical Optimism gave her more freedom to explore trip-hop, Britpop and live instrumentation. Rather than treating the difference as a strict genre boundary, her comments suggest a shift in how she approached the work: less reliance on a fixed formula, with pop sensibility still acting as a guide.
