Fred Rogers Productions announced his arrival on March 12, 2021, with a debut date of April 5, 2021. Max joined the animated Neighborhood of Make-Believe alongside his older sister, Amira.
Who is Max on Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood?
Max is Teacher Harriet’s nephew. The producer’s announcement described him as autistic and said he would become a recurring character in the series. His older sister Amira joined the animated cast at the same time. Fred Rogers Productions’ March 12, 2021 announcement introduced both characters.
The show’s description gives Max specific interests and ways he experiences his surroundings: he likes numbers, buses, and bugs, and he is a big fan of Amira. He is sensitive to loud sounds, bright flashing lights, and uncomfortable fabrics. The announcement also says he may take more time to warm up to new friends and experiences and sometimes prefers playing alone. These are details about Max as a fictional character, not a checklist for identifying or diagnosing a child; autistic children are individuals and do not all share the same traits.
When did Max first appear?
Fred Rogers Productions announced Max on March 12, 2021, and said he would make his debut on April 5, 2021. The release named him a recurring character, rather than a one-time guest. A PBS page later included the episode “Daniel’s New Friend Max” among fan-selected episodes; it does not change the original announced debut date. PBS’s tenth-anniversary announcement includes that episode listing.

Who voices Max, and how was the character developed?
Max is voiced by Israel Thomas-Bruce. In the 2021 release, the production team said Thomas-Bruce had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age four and described him at that time as a 13-year-old eighth grader. Those are details from the dated announcement, not current information about his age or schooling.
Fred Rogers Productions said the team consulted University of Missouri researcher Dr. Wes Dotson and the Autism Society while developing Max. Supervising producer Chris Loggins said the team hoped to help more children “feel represented and included on TV,” and noted that young viewers can learn that friends have different needs and may learn, play, and communicate in their own ways. The production announcement contains the character and development details.
