Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds held their wedding ceremony on September 9, 2012, at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, outside Charleston. A later Martha Stewart Weddings feature revealed selected details of the private celebration, including Lively’s custom Marchesa gown and a dessert table. The venue is also an essential part of the story: in 2020, Reynolds said the couple were deeply sorry they had chosen a site built on tragedy.
Where and when did Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds get married?
The ceremony took place on September 9, 2012, at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just outside Charleston, according to Vogue’s contemporaneous report and the Los Angeles Times.
The ceremony date and the couple’s legal marriage date were not the same. CBS News reported that they filed marriage-license paperwork on September 13 and, according to People, were legally married the following day, September 14. That distinction matters when accounts describe the wedding as having taken place on September 9: that date refers to the ceremony.
What did the private wedding look like?
The couple kept the event private and later shared photographs of selected details with Martha Stewart Weddings, rather than opening the occasion to unrestricted coverage. Vogue reported that the reception took place beneath a white tent and included a performance by Florence Welch, who sang three songs. A local radio journalist quoted by Vogue estimated the guest count at around 60; that was an estimate, not a confirmed number.

The Los Angeles Times quoted planner Tara Guerard describing the couple’s aim as making the event “look and feel like home.” Its account also described a carnival-themed cocktail hour. Those contemporary reports offer glimpses of the celebration, but the couple’s choice to share selected images means they do not amount to a complete record of the day.
What did Blake Lively wear?
Martha Stewart Weddings described Lively’s gown as a custom Marchesa design in silk tulle, with a fitted bodice, illusion crystal beading at the shoulders, and rose-gold embroidery. The Los Angeles Times also reported custom Marchesa attire. These were commissioned wedding garments, not standard retail versions.

The feature credited Lorraine Schwartz for the couple’s wedding bands. It also listed Christian Louboutin shoes for Lively and bespoke Burberry suits for Reynolds and the other men in the wedding party.
Which flowers, food, and desserts were featured?
Bouquet
The Martha Stewart Weddings feature credited style director Kate Berry with creating a bouquet of pink jasmine, andromeda, dusty miller, and blushing bride hydrangea. Selected petals were accented with rose-gold glitter, echoing the gown’s embroidery.

Meal and dessert table
Charleston chef Mike Lata of FIG was credited with the meal. The dessert table’s focal point was a vanilla-and-sour-cream cake filled with peach-apricot preserves and Earl Grey-milk chocolate buttercream, made by Maggie Austin Cake in Alexandria, Virginia.
Other named sweets included s’mores bars from Bakehouse Charleston; espresso beans from Nuts.com; blueberry cheesecake tartlets, lemon tartlets, and mini strawberry shortcakes from Caviar & Bananas; and pâtes de fruits from La Maison du Chocolat. Charleston City Paper additionally reported that King of Pops supplied popsicles and that Lettered Olive made the menu cards.

Boone Hall was a plantation site associated with slavery, not simply a picturesque setting. In a 2020 interview reported by CBS News, Reynolds said, “It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for,” referring to the venue choice. He described the site as built on tragedy.

CBS also reported that the couple donated $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. That donation is part of the account of their response; it does not erase the history of the venue or make the original choice unproblematic.
What the published accounts establish
The wedding coverage offers a specific but partial portrait: the ceremony date and location, selected fashion and reception details, and named contributors. The couple’s privacy shaped what became public, while later reporting added the distinction between the ceremony and legal marriage dates—and the couple’s regret over the venue.
