Netflix’s 2024 animated musical fantasy Spellbound is rated PG on Netflix’s listing and follows a teenage princess whose parents have been turned into monsters. The adventure also explores changing relationships between parents and children, including family separation. Those themes may matter as much as the fantasy premise when deciding whether to watch it together.
What is Spellbound about?
Princess Ellian sets out to reverse the spell that has transformed her parents into monsters and threatens her kingdom. Netflix frames the film as a musical fantasy adventure; its Tudum feature also describes the story as an allegory for the separation and changing relationships that can occur between parents and children.

That family context may be worth discussing before watching if your child has personal experience with family separation. This is a consideration suggested by Netflix’s description, not a clinical assessment or an age-specific viewing recommendation.
Is Spellbound appropriate for kids?
Netflix lists Spellbound as PG and includes it among its Family Movies, Kids & Family Movies, Kids Music, and Musicals categories. These are Netflix listing details, not a universal age recommendation. Netflix’s 2024 listing gives the runtime as 1 hour 46 minutes. Netflix Media Center records the release date as November 22, 2024.
Audio and subtitles depend on your region
Netflix lists English original audio along with dubbed audio and subtitle options. The US and Australia listings show that language choices can differ by region. Check the film’s page in your local Netflix catalog for current availability and supported languages.

Who made the film?
Vicky Jenson directed Spellbound. Alan Menken composed the original score, and Glenn Slater wrote the lyrics. The voice cast includes Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman. Netflix describes it as a Netflix film from Skydance Animation.
Jenson told Netflix Tudum: “If we start with the familiar — the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell — we could use that to express the story of this family,”
