In a November 2022 interview with People en Español, the actor said acting’s uncertainty taught her to stay present—and that her professional worth does not depend on landing any one role.
The life lesson: do not wait for the next opportunity
Asked what pursuing an acting career had taught her about herself, Riva said the most important personal lesson she recognized early was “to be in the present and do not wait to live life.” She described a profession with ups and downs, where waiting for a major opportunity can mean putting life on hold for an uncertain amount of time.

Her point was about how she wanted to live alongside her work, not a claim that ambition or career goals do not matter. In the interview, she framed presence as a way to avoid making an unpredictable industry the condition for enjoying life.
Her professional lesson: self-worth is not one role
Riva drew a distinction between her personal lesson and her professional one. She said she committed early to believing that she was enough, “no matter what the business might say or not say,” and that her self-worth was not tied to any single role. That sense of worth, she said, is constant.

The distinction matters in her account: acting work may be inconsistent, but a casting decision is not a measure of a person’s value. Riva called sustaining a long career her greatest professional achievement and acknowledged that it is not easy to maintain one in acting.
Making choices about a career’s next chapter
Riva also described career longevity as a series of choices about what she wanted from the next chapter of her work. Pursuing a dream can involve difficult decisions; her interview presents that process alongside, rather than in place of, her emphasis on not making life wait for professional certainty.

Why Gordita Chronicles felt personal
Riva said playing Adela in Gordita Chronicles was meaningful because the show reflected parts of her Dominican heritage and family experience. She recalled viewers telling her that the Castelli family reminded them of their own families and that Adela brought their tía to mind.

That response shaped how she spoke about representation: Riva argued that more Latino stories should reach the screen and called for more Latinos behind the camera. She put the concern plainly in the interview: “It shouldn’t be this hard to get a show with Latinos on the air. Asked about sisterhood, Riva said women should support and uplift one another, even when they disagree or do not have much in common. “With every fiber of my being, I believe strongly that women need to be good women to other women,” she said.
