NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiered on Paramount+ on September 4, 2025, so the useful question now is what to remember before catching up. The essential thread is this: Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David built a bond as NCIS colleagues, were separated by Ziva’s presumed death, and became parents to Tali. Tony left NCIS to raise their daughter; years later Ziva returned, completed one final mission, and reunited with Tony and Tali in Paris. The spinoff picks up with the family there, until an attack on Tony’s security company sends them running across Europe.
Who are Tony and Ziva to each other?
Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David were colleagues on the NCIS team, where years of shared cases and danger shaped a relationship that continued beyond Ziva’s time with the team. Their story is not just a romance to catch up on: it is also about loyalty, loss, parenthood and the cost of a life spent around danger.
Season 10 gives important context for Ziva’s family history. In “Berlin,” Tony and Ziva travel to Berlin while pursuing the person responsible for the murder of her father, Eli David. The season’s later episodes follow the fallout, including the deaths of Eli and Jackie Vance. Those events help explain the personal stakes around Ziva, but viewers do not need to watch the whole series to understand the spinoff’s premise. CBS’s Season 10 episode guide lists the relevant cases and episodes.
What happened after Ziva left NCIS?
Ziva’s departure did not resolve her connection with Tony. In Season 11, Episode 2, “Past, Present, and Future,” Tony follows leads to Israel in search of her. It is the clearest early episode to watch if you want to see how deeply her absence affects him. CBS’s Season 11 episode guide identifies the episode and its search storyline.

Later, Tony leaves NCIS to raise Tali after Ziva is presumed dead. Paramount’s official synopsis describes the sequence that leads to the spinoff: Ziva is eventually found alive, completes one final mission with NCIS, and reunites with Tony and their daughter in Paris. The synopsis establishes these major milestones, not every detail of the years between them, so it is better not to assume that Tony and Ziva spent that entire period living together. Paramount+’s series description sets out the family’s backstory and the new series’ premise.
How does Ziva return?
Ziva reappears in NCIS Season 17 after years underground, while family and friends believe she is dead. In “Out of the Darkness,” she surprises Gibbs with a cryptic warning. “Into the Light” continues the story of her return and explains more of the circumstances behind it.
