In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, former Call Her Daddy co-host Sofia Franklyn described the show’s 2020 breakup as both a business dispute and the loss of a close friendship. “The betrayal piece was more upsetting than the financial piece,” she said. Her account is a retrospective, not an independently verified record of the negotiations; the interview also summarizes Alex Cooper’s differing public explanation.
What did Sofia Franklyn mean by “betrayal”?
Franklyn said she had believed her friendship with Cooper was close and enduring. In the interview, she recalled imagining Cooper in her wedding party and as a godmother to her future children. Against that expectation, the disagreement over the podcast’s future felt to her like a personal rupture, not simply a failed business negotiation.
“The betrayal piece was more upsetting than the financial piece,” Franklyn told Rolling Stone in an interview published July 11, 2023. That describes Franklyn’s feelings and recollection; it does not establish Cooper’s intentions.
How did the Call Her Daddy partnership unravel?
Call Her Daddy was on Barstool Sports when the co-hosts’ contract discussions became public. Franklyn said she and Cooper had been approached about bringing the show to Barstool in 2018. The podcast stopped releasing episodes in April 2020 as negotiations played out; according to the interview’s timeline, Barstool founder Dave Portnoy published an explanation the following month.

Franklyn said she believed she and Cooper had been aligned on some terms, but that Cooper ultimately wanted to stay with Barstool while Franklyn objected to parts of the proposal. The interview reports that Cooper continued the show at Barstool until June 2021, then moved it to Spotify under a reported three-year, $60 million deal. That figure is the interview’s reporting, not a contract document reviewed in the story.
What business terms did Franklyn say mattered?
Franklyn identified ownership of the podcast’s intellectual property, alcohol-related rights, merchandise revenue, and compensation as points of concern. She said she worried about giving up rights and considered the merchandise share too low. The figures below are claims and recollections reported in the interview, not independently audited figures or verified contract terms.

The article also notes Franklyn had worked in finance and said her annual salary had been $40,000 before podcasting full time. That figure is her account as reported in the 2023 interview, not a broader measure of podcast-industry pay.
How did Cooper explain the split?
The interview summarizes Cooper’s 2022 video explanation: Cooper said she wanted to accept Barstool’s offer, grew frustrated with the negotiations, and eventually negotiated separately. This differs from Franklyn’s account of their alignment and disagreements. The interview presents competing perspectives; without the underlying agreements and a full record of the negotiations, its reported claims should not be treated as a settled account of every term or motive.

What happened to Franklyn after the split?
After leaving Barstool, Franklyn launched Sofia with an F. She said the early solo podcast did not begin with a fully formed editorial or marketing strategy; she wanted to speak to listeners again while she continued processing what had happened.
Franklyn also described struggling with public criticism and going to Utah to stay with family and step away from public attention. She said the experience left her feeling unprepared for entertainment-industry work and more cautious about business agreements. At the time of the 2023 interview, she said she was not speaking with Cooper or Portnoy, while also saying she did not feel angry. Those statements do not establish the parties’ relationship today.

Franklyn said she did not regret joining Barstool, though she wished she had done more preparation: “I don’t regret it,” she said. “But I definitely could have researched [more].” She also described the experience as part of her life story: “It’s all a part of my story.” Both statements are from the July 11, 2023 Rolling Stone interview.
The interview is a retrospective about the partnership, the negotiations as Franklyn recalls them, and the friendship’s end. It does not establish whether the two have reconciled since publication or the current status of either podcast’s distribution or ownership.
