Yvette Nicole Brown, meanwhile, has explicitly objected to others claiming to speak for her experience. These are substantial accounts, not a unanimous statement from the cast—and reports of a disputed 2012 incident differ in their details.
What Donald Glover and Dan Harmon said about remarks on set
In a 2018 profile of Glover in The New Yorker, Glover described Chase as “fighting time,” offering his interpretation of the older actor’s behavior rather than establishing Chase’s motives. “I just saw Chevy as fighting time — a true artist has to be O.K. with his reign being over,” Glover said. “I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere — he’s almost too human.” TheWrap reproduced the comments. [c001]
Harmon, the show’s creator, recalled that Chase made remarks between takes intended to unsettle Glover, including, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black.” Harmon said Chase recognized Glover’s talent and responded with jealousy: “Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off.” Harmon also recalled apologizing after a difficult night and Glover replying, “I don’t even worry about it.” These are Harmon’s and Glover’s reported recollections, not a verbatim record of every exchange. [c001]
What Joel McHale said about their friction
McHale responded publicly after Chase said on Marc Maron’s podcast that Community was not funny or hard-hitting enough for him and that he did not want to be surrounded by the cast. “The feeling’s mutual, bud,” McHale replied. He added that Chase “could have left” and that “we weren’t sentenced to that show.” TheWrap’s account also summarizes McHale’s 2016 memoir, Thanks for the Money: How to Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be, which discusses tension, racial terms, jokes about sexual assault, and an on-set argument. McHale’s account, as summarized there, says he accidentally dislocated Chase’s shoulder during an argument; that remains a detail from McHale’s account, not independently corroborated here. [c005]

What Yvette Nicole Brown has—and has not—said
In 2025, amid discussion connected to a Chase documentary, Brown objected to people speaking about her experiences as if they had authority to do so. “There are things I’ve never spoken of publicly and perhaps never will,” she wrote. She said people speaking “FOR or ABOUT me” had not spoken to her about the matters they claimed to know, and could not credibly speak about her relationships or past issues. She concluded, “In East Cleveland speak: Keep my name out your mouth.” TheWrap reported the statement; it did not directly name Chase or the documentary. It therefore should not be treated as Brown confirming a particular version of the disputed incident. [c003]
Why accounts of the 2012 incident differ
The incident became public in contemporaneous reporting on October 20, 2012. TVLine reported, citing sources, that production briefly halted after Chase used a slur while Brown and Glover were present. Those sources said he was frustrated with dialogue for Pierce, that the slur was not specifically directed at either actor, and that Chase summoned the cast and crew to apologize. [c002]

A later account differs in emphasis. Director Jay Chandrasekhar recounted the event in a documentary, saying Brown left the set and wanted an apology, and that Chase questioned what he should apologize for. Variety reported Chandrasekhar’s recollection, including his line: “Well, she won’t come out unless Chevy apologizes to her.” That is a retrospective account, not a contemporaneous transcript. The two reports do not establish an identical exchange or settle how the apology unfolded; their differing details should remain attributed to their respective sources. [c004]
What Dan Harmon said about the working environment
Harmon later characterized the relationship with Chase as “flint and steel” and said the problem was an “avalanche,” not a single remark. He said the consequences of Season 4 included other people feeling unsafe in a workplace he had created, while also acknowledging his own shortcomings as a workplace leader. The Hollywood Reporter covered Harmon’s comments in 2026, in an interview about Chase’s absence from the Community film. [c007]

What these comments do—and do not—establish
Glover and Harmon described racially insensitive remarks and tension involving Glover. McHale described friction and answered Chase’s later criticism in kind. Harmon discussed broader workplace consequences and his own responsibility as a leader. Brown’s statement sets a boundary on what others may claim about her; it does not supply her account of the incident. And the two reports about that incident differ in their sourcing and details. These comments do not establish a collective cast position: the available public accounts are from particular people, and silence from other cast members cannot be taken as agreement or dissent.
