Kal-El, Clark Kent and Superman are the same person. The central Superman family around him includes his wife Lois Lane, their son Jon Kent, his cousin Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), the clone Kon-El (Superboy), and Krypto, the Kent family’s dog. They are connected in different ways: marriage, parentage, cousinhood, shared DNA and companionship—not all by blood.
Who is Superman related to?
DC uses “Superman family” as a broad umbrella rather than a fixed, exhaustive roster. This guide focuses on the central relationships in DC’s character profiles; alternate universes, older continuity and adaptations may tell different stories.
Kal-El is Superman’s Kryptonian name, while Clark Kent is the identity he uses on Earth. DC describes him as Krypton’s last survivor and notes that he was raised in Smallville. His first appearance was in Action Comics #1 in 1938. DC’s Superman profile outlines his identities and background.

Lois Lane: Clark’s spouse
Lois Lane is Clark Kent’s wife in the continuity summarized by DC. The couple married in 1996, but their relationship history has shifted across continuity changes: a DC retrospective published April 24, 2023, describes a reboot-era separation and their later reunion. Lois is also Jon Kent’s mother. DC’s relationship history provides that account; it is not a claim that every adaptation follows the same timeline.
Jon Kent: Clark and Lois’s son
Jon Kent is the son of Clark and Lois, and is half Kryptonian and half human. DC’s profile says he once went by Superboy and, fully grown, now uses his father’s Superman name. He first appeared in Convergence: Superman #2 in 2015. DC’s Jon Kent profile identifies his parents and current mantle.

Jon’s history began in the Convergence story, and his continuity was later integrated into the main DC universe. DC explained that development in a feature dated July 28, 2021. DC’s Jon Kent feature traces that history.
Kara Zor-El: Superman’s cousin
Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, is Superman’s cousin. DC’s profile identifies her as a Kryptonian sent to Earth from the dying planet Krypton, and gives her first appearance as Action Comics #252 in 1959. The profile does not specify a more precise cousin degree, so it is best not to infer one. DC’s Supergirl profile confirms the relationship and her identity.

Kon-El and Jon Kent: two different Superboys
Kon-El and Jon Kent are separate characters, even though both have used the name Superboy. Kon-El is a clone created from Kryptonian and human DNA, with DNA shared with Lex Luthor; he is not Clark and Lois’s son. DC’s separate Superboy profile describes Kon-El, while its Jon Kent profile names Jon as Clark and Lois’s child and currently identifies him as Superman. The shared mantle is the source of much of the confusion.

Krypto is a dog from Krypton and the Kent family’s pet. DC calls him a friend to the entire Superman family and describes him playing with Supergirl and Jon. That makes him part of the household and wider family circle by companionship—not a human or Kryptonian blood relative. His first appearance was in Adventure Comics #210 in 1955. DC’s Krypto profile gives his background and family role.
