Sophie Turner was cast as Sansa Stark at 13 and began filming Game of Thrones at 14, according to her 2026 retrospective interview with The Guardian. It was her first job, and she has described learning the craft on set while watching Sansa learn to survive through observation and adaptation. Turner’s recollections offer a view of the series from the perspective of an actor who grew up alongside her character.
How Sophie Turner got the role of Sansa Stark
Turner has said her school drama teacher encouraged her to audition after a Game of Thrones casting search reached her school. At the time, she knew little about HBO, the show or George R. R. Martin. Her account of the audition is a reminder that the role began as an unexpected opportunity, not a long-planned entry into a major television production. TIME’s 2016 interview covers how the school audition came about.
How old was Sophie Turner when she started filming?
The ages depend on which milestone is meant. In a 2026 interview with The Guardian, Turner said she was cast at 13 and began filming at 14. In a 2017 interview with TIME, she described herself as 13 when she started the job. These are differently worded recollections; the clearer distinction in the later interview is between being cast and beginning production. The Guardian’s 2026 retrospective and TIME’s 2017 interview record the accounts.
Learning to act while Sansa learned to survive
Turner has called Game of Thrones her first job and said the set was where she learned the business of acting. In the 2017 TIME interview, she said, “That was one of the great things about it being my first job.” Looking back in 2026, she put the learning curve more directly: “I learned how to act on that set, and now I’m thinking: that’s not how to do it.” She also said she felt self-conscious watching her early work. The latter is her retrospective judgment of her own performance, not a claim that she lacked ability or that the show’s production was a formal acting school. TIME; The Guardian.

Turner has connected her own learning by experience to Sansa’s changing understanding of power. She described Sansa’s early quietness as a strategy: speaking openly against powerful people could put her in danger, while watching, adapting and keeping her thoughts hidden helped her endure. In this reading, Sansa’s silence is not simply passivity. It is a response to the limited and dangerous choices available to her. Turner discussed that interpretation in TIME’s 2017 interview and British Vogue’s 2019 interview.
Turner’s memories of filming with the cast
One of Turner’s favorite early memories was the first day of filming, when the Stark family and other central families were together at Winterfell. Asked about a favorite memory by British Vogue in 2019, she answered, “Probably the first-ever day of filming because everyone was there.” She also recalled finding it difficult to keep a straight face in reunion scenes with Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark, because the actors had become close friends. These are Turner’s recollections of the working atmosphere, distinct from the events depicted in the story. British Vogue, May 13, 2019.

What Turner said about Sansa’s season-five assault storyline
The season-five storyline in which Sansa is sexually assaulted was a difficult and consequential part of the character’s arc. Turner described it as a portrayal of power and argued in interviews in 2017 and 2019 that the subject should not be ignored. That is her stated view about depicting the storyline; it should not be confused with a claim about real-world prevalence, nor does it settle how every viewer responds to the way it was written or shown. Her comments appear in TIME’s 2017 interview and ABC News’ 2019 report.
What Sophie Turner thought of the Game of Thrones ending
In March 2019, before the series finale aired, Turner said she felt satisfied with the ending and believed the story arcs closed well. “I feel very satisfied with the ending of the entire show. Every story arc came to a really good close,” she told ABC News. This describes Turner’s response at the time, not a consensus among viewers or critics. ABC News, March 26, 2019.

Life after the series
Turner has also described the challenge of defining herself after spending much of her youth on the show. In her 2026 Guardian interview, she said that once the series ended she needed to discover who she was beyond the kinds of roles she was being offered. It adds a personal dimension to her retrospective: leaving Westeros meant not only finishing a long-running job, but also working out what she wanted her career and identity to be next. The Guardian, January 16, 2026.
