Prince’s estate was ultimately valued at $156.4 million in a 2022 settlement of a six-year dispute. That was an estate-tax valuation—not a cash balance or the amount handed to his heirs. The court-approved distribution included cash, music rights and other intangible assets.
Why were Prince’s estate valuations so different?
Prince died in April 2016 without a will, and his estate entered Minnesota probate. Comerica Bank & Trust, the estate administrator, and the IRS took sharply different positions on its value. The figure they agreed on was close to the IRS assessment, but it was not a separate payment to the family.

These are competing valuations of the estate, not three separate sums that Prince had in cash. The settlement also dropped a $6.4 million IRS accuracy-related penalty. The Minnesota Department of Revenue dropped an accuracy penalty as well, according to the probate filing described by the Star Tribune. The available reporting does not provide a complete final tax calculation.
What made the estate difficult to value?
The dispute covered real estate and assets whose worth is less straightforward than a bank balance, including recordings, publishing rights, and Prince’s name and likeness. An industry summary identifies NPG Records, NPG Music Publishing, and name and likeness as examples of disputed assets. The sources do not disclose the final agreed value of each category.

Music rights can generate income over time, and their value depends on the rights being assessed and the assumptions used to estimate future earnings. The available accounts establish that such intangible assets were part of the dispute; they do not provide a complete asset-by-asset valuation or enough information to calculate a current catalog value.
Who inherited Prince’s money, and what was distributed?
Prince’s six siblings were heirs or holders of interests through the probate proceeding. Three inheritors sold their interests to Primary Wave. In 2022, a Minnesota judge approved an agreement that completed the probate distribution process, dividing assets among Primary Wave, remaining heirs or their families, and advisers.

The Guardian described the agreement as allocating $6 million in cash alongside a much larger amount in music rights and other intangible assets. That cash figure is not the estate’s total value, nor does it establish what any one beneficiary received. The reports do not provide an equal-share calculation or a beneficiary-by-beneficiary ledger.
What happened to Prince’s music after his death?
Posthumous releases and archival projects continued while the estate was being administered. The Guardian cited Welcome 2 America and back-catalog reissues of Purple Rain, 1999, and Sign o’ the Times. Those releases show that the catalog remained active; they do not establish how much it is worth today or how proceeds were divided.

What can’t be concluded from the $156.4 million figure?
- It does not show Prince’s cash balance at death or the cash inheritance received by any individual heir.
- It does not establish each beneficiary’s taxes, expenses, or net proceeds.
- It is not a current valuation of the catalog or the estate’s assets.
- It should not be confused with early rough estimates, including a $200 million estimate cited in 2017 reporting; the agreed $156.4 million figure was reported in 2022.
