The current reference is SRD 5.2.1. It gives creators a basis for making compatible products—but it does not include every D&D monster, brand element, or setting, and the Beholder is among the exclusions.
What changed in the D&D System Reference Document
Wizards announced on May 6, 2024, that it would expand the existing SRD using material from the revised Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. The expanded SRD 5.2 followed in 2025. The current official page lists SRD 5.2.1, published May 1, 2025, and includes a conversion guide for creators updating work from SRD 5.1. D&D Beyond’s SRD page is now labeled SRD v5.2.1.
The updated document revises rules material including character creation, classes, character origins, feats, equipment, and the rules glossary. It adds backgrounds and species, weapon mastery properties, and other rules changes. Version 5.2.1 also adds 15 magic items that were omitted from the initial 5.2 release.
In a March 2, 2026 note, D&D Beyond clarified its naming: it calls the revised rules “5.5e” and continues to call the 2014 rules “5e.” The note describes a terminology clarification, not a change to purchases or gameplay. The page also lists German, Spanish, French, and Italian SRDs published December 8, 2025.

Which SRD should creators use?
| Route | Rules or content target | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| SRD 5.1 | 2014 fifth-edition rules, labeled “5e” by D&D Beyond | Compatible publishing based on the material included in SRD 5.1, subject to its license terms and attribution. |
| SRD 5.2.1 | Revised fifth-edition rules, labeled “5.5e” by D&D Beyond | Compatible publishing based on the material included in the revised SRD, subject to CC BY 4.0 and attribution. |
| DMsGuild | Content set in official D&D worlds, such as the Forgotten Realms | Wizards identifies DMsGuild as the route for publishing within those settings; its terms are distinct from SRD licensing. |
Wizards says SRD 5.1 remains available for creators making products for the 2014 rules. Choose the SRD that matches the rules your product is intended to support, then check whether the specific rules, names, and creatures you plan to use appear in that document. The SRD page explains the available routes and creator permissions in its official overview and FAQ.
What CC BY 4.0 lets creators do
Wizards released SRD 5.2 under CC BY 4.0. It says creators may use SRD material to publish and sell compatible products, including print products, and may use it commercially through crowdfunding or ongoing-support platforms, provided they follow the license and give the required attribution. Wizards staff summed up creator ownership in the May 27, 2025 announcement: “Anything you create using SRD 5.2 is yours!” That statement concerns creators’ own work and their use of material the SRD actually licenses; it is not blanket permission to use D&D intellectual property omitted from the document. Wizards’ announcement gives the context.

Wizards’ FAQ also says it cannot revoke or alter a document after publishing it under CC BY 4.0. It can publish a corrected or revised SRD as a new version, such as 5.2.1 or a future 5.2.2, while each released version remains available under Creative Commons terms. Creators should use the version they intend to rely on and meet its attribution requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the SRD does not include
The SRD is a selective rules reference, not a license to use every part of D&D. Wizards names the Artificer, Aasimar, and Beholder as examples of excluded classes, species, and monsters. It says these exclusions reflect brand identity, licensing strategy, and intellectual property, and encourages creators to make original equivalents.

- Do not assume a familiar D&D name or creature is covered. Check the relevant SRD itself; the Beholder is specifically excluded.
- Do not treat rules compatibility as setting permission. SRD licensing does not automatically cover Forgotten Realms lore, trademarks, or other omitted setting material.
- For official-setting stories or supplements, consider the route Wizards identifies. Its overview points creators who want to publish within worlds such as the Forgotten Realms to DMsGuild rather than treating that material as part of the SRD.
Wizards first announced the expansion in “2024 Core Rulebooks to Expand the SRD” on May 6, 2024. Its May 27, 2025 article, “You Can Now Publish Your Own Creations Using the New Core Rules,” announced SRD 5.2 and explained the Creative Commons release.
