For Thanos’s main MCU story, watch The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, in release order. Add What If…? for animated alternate-universe appearances. This is a character-focused screen guide, not a complete list across comics, games, or every MCU multiverse cameo.
Every Thanos appearance in release order
This order follows the films’ release and the way the MCU revealed Thanos. The first and third entries are brief post-credits scenes; the middle entries carry the main story arc. The sequence follows the character-focused list published by HackerNoon on February 4, 2023, with later alternate-universe appearances noted below.
- Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), also released as Avengers Assemble in some territories. Thanos appears in the film’s final post-credits scene after Loki’s defeat. Disney’s retrospective describes this as the first look at him: Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe retrospective.
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Thanos appears within the story, linked to Ronan and his adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula.
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). He appears in the credits scene and takes the Infinity Gauntlet.
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Thanos is the central antagonist, pursuing the Infinity Stones.
- Avengers: Endgame (2019). Thanos appears in the immediate aftermath of Infinity War and as a 2014 version during the time-heist story.
- What If…? (2021–2024). The animated series includes alternate-universe versions of Thanos. Which episodes to watch depends on whether you want selected character-relevant appearances or a broader multiverse tour.
What “every appearance” includes—and what it misses
The five films above make up the core Infinity Saga sequence. What If…? extends the guide into alternate realities, but the six-entry list is not exhaustive for later MCU screen appearances. A broader overview also records alternate Thanos appearances in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Marvel Zombies. These are multiverse cases rather than additional chapters in the main Thanos arc; see the overview of Thanos in the MCU for the broader list.
“Every” here means MCU screen appearances at a practical character-guide level. It does not claim to catalog comics, games, licensed products, archival material, or every possible voice-only mention.

Release order or in-universe chronology?
Release order is the clearest choice for a first watch or a character-arc rewatch: it preserves the sequence in which the films introduce and develop Thanos. In-universe chronology instead sorts events by when they happen inside the story. Those are different viewing goals, and a chronology is complicated by time-displaced and alternate-reality versions.
| Viewing choice | Best for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Release/narrative order | First viewing or a Thanos-focused rewatch | Not a timeline of fictional events |
| In-universe chronology | A timeline-focused MCU rewatch | Time travel and alternate realities complicate placement; it is not the character-reveal order |
For a wider MCU timeline, Rotten Tomatoes separates chronological and release-order approaches in its MCU movies in order guide. The list above is specifically the Thanos-focused release sequence.

Thanos’s screen debut is not his comics debut
Thanos first appears on MCU screen in the The Avengers post-credits scene. In comics, Marvel identifies Iron Man (1968) #55 as his first appearance. Those are separate milestones, as Marvel’s Thanos reading guide makes clear.
The same guide points readers to The Thanos Quest (1990) #1 and Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1 as comics companions. They are optional reading, not prerequisites for following the MCU films.
