For Kratos’ life story, play the released games in this order: God of War Sons of Sparta, Ascension, Chains of Olympus, God of War (2005), Ghost of Sparta, God of War II, God of War III, God of War (2018), Ragnarök, then Valhalla. The last item is a post-story DLC, not a standalone main game. If this is your first time with the series, release order is a better starting point because it preserves the games’ original reveals.
God of War games in story chronology
This is a story-order guide based on where the games fit in Kratos’ life. PlayStation describes Sons of Sparta as a canon prequel, but its current franchise page does not publish a complete official chronology for the older Greek-era games. Their relative placements below reflect their story settings.

- God of War Sons of Sparta (2026) — A canon youth-era prequel following Kratos and his brother Deimos during Spartan training and their search for a missing comrade. PlayStation lists it for PS5 and gives its release date as February 12, 2026. PlayStation’s franchise page identifies it as a prequel to the series.
- God of War: Ascension (2013) — An early Greek-era prequel, set before the other Greek saga games.
- God of War: Chains of Olympus (2008) — A Greek-era prequel from the period when Kratos serves the gods.
- God of War (2005) — The original game, which began the series on PS2.
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010) — A Greek-era interquel set after the original game.
- God of War II (2007) — Continues the Greek saga after Ghost of Sparta.
- God of War III (2010) — The next major chapter in the Greek saga.
- God of War (2018) — Kratos’ story moves to the Norse world, where he travels with his son Atreus.
- God of War Ragnarök (2022) — Continues the Norse-era story of Kratos and Atreus.
- God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla (2023) — A DLC epilogue set after Ragnarök, rather than a standalone main entry.
Which order should you play first?
For a first playthrough, choose release order. The prequels were made for players who already knew Kratos, so beginning with his youth-era story changes the sequence in which the series introduces its character and reveals. Story chronology is a useful second route if you want events arranged around his life.

What belongs in the list—and what does not?
Valhalla is DLC
Valhalla is set after Ragnarök and is an additional story, not a full standalone game. PlayStation says it is free to owners of Ragnarök on PS4 and PS5 and included with the PC purchase. See PlayStation’s franchise page for its platform and edition details.
Betrayal is a side game with an uncertain place
The older mobile game God of War: Betrayal is commonly placed around the first game’s era, but the official pages cited here do not establish its exact chronological position. It is therefore not included in the numbered core story order.

Do not count unreleased games as playable entries
PlayStation lists God of War Laufey for February 16, 2027. It is not part of a list of games already released as of October 2026.

The original platform and release details help explain why access differs across the series. PlayStation lists these principal releases: God of War (PS2, 2005); God of War II (PS2, 2007); Chains of Olympus (PSP, 2008); God of War III (PS3, 2010); Ghost of Sparta (PSP, 2010); Ascension (PS3, 2013); God of War (PS4, 2018); and Ragnarök (PS4 and PS5, 2022). PlayStation also identifies the 2018 game and Ragnarök as available on PC. Sons of Sparta launched on PS5 on February 12, 2026. Details are listed on PlayStation’s franchise page.

The Greek-era games tell the earlier part of Kratos’ story; God of War (2018) begins a distinct Norse-world journey with Atreus, continued in Ragnarök. PlayStation frames the 2018 game and its sequel as a new journey, rather than another chapter set among the Greek pantheon. In the 2018 game, Creative Director Cory Barlog described Atreus as a reminder of another path for Kratos: “The son is the humanity that Kratos lost. He’s that mirror that’s reminding him that there is a different way, a way that he might have forgotten so long ago.” The statement and the franchise’s era descriptions appear on PlayStation’s official series page.
