Tyler Christopher, the General Hospital actor and Eva Longoria’s former husband, died at his San Diego apartment on October 31, 2023, at age 50. His former co-star Maurice Benard initially said Christopher had died “following a cardiac event.” In January 2024, E! News reported a different, later account: the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s report listed positional asphyxia due to acute alcohol intoxication as the cause of death, coronary artery atherosclerosis as a contributing factor, and the manner of death as accidental.
What happened to Tyler Christopher?
Christopher’s representative confirmed his death to CBS News. On the day he died, former General Hospital co-star Maurice Benard announced: “Tyler passed away this morning following a cardiac event in his San Diego apartment.” CBS noted that the representative’s initial statement did not give a cause of death. CBS News reported the announcement and confirmation.

That “cardiac event” wording describes Benard’s initial announcement, not the later medical-examiner finding reported by E! News. In January 2024, E! News said the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s report identified positional asphyxia due to acute alcohol intoxication as the cause, coronary artery atherosclerosis as a contributing factor, and the death as accidental. E! News reported those findings from the examiner’s report. The report itself was not directly reviewed for this account.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office explains that closed medical-examiner reports are public records and may include a doctor’s conclusions about cause and manner of death. The county’s medical-examiner FAQ provides that general context; it is not a substitute for Christopher’s report.

Who was Tyler Christopher?
Christopher was best known for playing Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital. CBS, citing its affiliate KFMB-TV, reported that he appeared in more than 1,100 episodes between 1996 and 2016. The Washington Post divides his time on the show into three stints: 1996–99, 2003–11, and 2013–16. CBS also reported that he won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 2016.
