Why Church released the song early
Church had written “Darkest Hour” before Hurricane Helene and expected to wait until the following year to release music. After the storm, the song’s promise, “I’ll come running,” felt especially relevant. In an October 3, 2024 announcement, MCA quoted Church saying, “We were going to wait to release music until next year, but it just didn’t feel right to wait with this song.” MCA’s announcement said the release was intended to support immediate relief and longer-term resilience in North Carolina.
What “Darkest Hour” means
Church described the song’s immediate meaning as connected to people affected by Helene who needed help. He also framed its message more broadly: in difficult times, people can support one another, and those able to help should show up. As he put it in the MCA announcement, “And I think it’s also important to be one of the people that go running when other people need help.”

Where the song appears
The track is included on Church’s album Evangeline vs. The Machine, where MCA’s track list gives its title as “Darkest Hour” and places it at track five. The label describes the arrangement as featuring flute, French horn, and trombone—an unusual instrumental combination for a country single. MCA’s release announcement and track information provide the album context.
Church’s official site later listed a live performance on Evangeline vs. The Machine: Comes Alive. It was recorded at The Pinnacle in Nashville on May 24, 2025. See Church’s music listings.
