The Epstein files released by the U.S. Department of Justice in January 2026 include reported emails between Elon Musk and Jeffrey Epstein from 2012 and 2013. The messages discuss social plans and possible travel to Epstein’s Caribbean island, but the reporting does not establish that Musk visited. TIME said the emails contain no indication of wrongdoing by Musk. The headline claim that Musk is “not doing well” is not established by the records: they show a reputational story, not evidence about his health or state of mind.

What did the Epstein files actually say about Elon Musk?

On January 30, 2026, the Justice Department said it had published more than 3 million additional pages in response to the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The new production also included more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. Including prior releases, the department said the total production was nearly 3.5 million pages. The materials came from several criminal cases and investigations involving Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the investigation into Epstein’s death, FBI investigations, and an Inspector General investigation. The DOJ’s library provides access to the releases and explains their handling.

Among the records, the Associated Press reported email exchanges between Epstein and Musk from 2012 and 2013. In one 2012 exchange, Epstein asked how many people Musk wanted flown by helicopter to the island. AP reported Musk replied, “Probably just Talulah and me,” then asked, “What day/night will be the wildest party on our island?”

In correspondence ahead of a 2013 trip, Musk said he expected to be in the British Virgin Islands and St. Barts area and asked whether there was a good time to visit. Epstein invited him after New Year. AP said it was not immediately clear whether any island visit took place. AP’s account reports the exchanges and the uncertainty about travel.

Do the emails show that Musk visited Epstein’s island?

No completed visit is established by the reporting cited here. The emails show discussion of possible arrangements, not proof that Musk went. TIME described a January 2013 message in which Musk said, “Logistics won’t work this time around,” followed by later correspondence about a possible visit that Epstein ultimately cancelled because he would remain in New York.

TIME reported that it reviewed 16 emails between the two men dated 2012 and 2013. It also reported a February 2013 email from Epstein thanking Musk for a SpaceX tour, alongside a prior Musk statement disputing that Epstein toured SpaceX. That reported email is separate from the question of whether Musk visited the island; it does not establish such a visit. TIME’s account provides its timeline and Musk’s response.

What has Musk said about the correspondence?

As reported by TIME, Musk said: “I had very little correspondence with Epstein and declined repeated invitations to go to his island or fly on his ‘Lolita Express’, but was well aware that some email correspondence with him could be misinterpreted and used by detractors to smear my name.” AP also reported Musk’s 2025 statement: “Epstein tried to get me to go to his island and I REFUSED.”

The contemporaneous emails and Musk’s later account are different kinds of evidence: the messages document correspondence and possible plans; his statements describe his position on whether he accepted invitations. TIME said the emails contain no indication of wrongdoing by Musk. Contact or an invitation, by itself, does not establish criminal conduct.

Are the viral Musk–Epstein email screenshots genuine?

Not all images circulating online are authentic. Lead Stories examined a viral image purporting to show an “epic island vacation” email thread between Musk and Epstein. It reported that the distinctive phrases shown in the image did not appear in searches of the DOJ release and concluded that this specific screenshot was fabricated. That finding concerns the image it checked; it is not a judgment about every email in the government’s collection. Read the Lead Stories fact-check.

How should readers assess documents in the release?

The DOJ warned that its production may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents, or videos because responsive material sent to the FBI by the public was included. An item’s presence in the government collection therefore does not automatically authenticate every claim or submission it contains. The department’s library also warns that, given the volume, some non-public personal or sensitive information may have been inadvertently posted. Readers should use official records and credible reporting to verify claims, and avoid sharing victim-identifying or intimate details.

  • What the reported Musk emails establish: correspondence and discussion of possible social plans and travel.
  • What they do not establish: a completed visit to Epstein’s island or wrongdoing by Musk.
  • What the viral screenshot check establishes: Lead Stories found one specific “epic island vacation” image fabricated, not that all released correspondence is false.
