Can I still play The Simpsons: Tapped Out?
No. The official online game became inaccessible when EA turned off its servers on January 24, 2025, as reported by The Independent. An installed copy of the app does not provide a way to play the game after that shutdown.

The game was built around creating and maintaining a player’s own version of Springfield. Its end therefore meant more than losing access to an app: the online service that supported those player-created towns ended too. The Independent reported individual players’ feelings of attachment to their Springfields; those accounts are personal recollections, not a representative survey.
When did Tapped Out shut down?
EA’s September 2024 announcement set out a sequence of end-of-service dates. The first two dates below were plans announced at the time; the final shutdown was subsequently reported as completed.

What did the final update include?
The final update, called “Taps,” began on September 26, 2024. A community-maintained archive of the update documents farewell questlines and returning store content, including items offered in waves and in-game donut rewards. These were features of the game’s final period, not options available after the server shutdown.

EA’s farewell statement, as reproduced in contemporaneous coverage, described a twelve-year run and reported 308 updates, 831 characters, and 1,463 questlines, including the farewell. These are figures from EA’s statement, not independently audited totals. The statement thanked players for building their own versions of Springfield.
Why did EA shut down Tapped Out?
EA’s announcement stated that it had made the decision to end the game but did not give a specific reason for this sunset. It would be speculation to assign the decision to licensing, revenue, server costs, or a particular player-count threshold.

EA’s general online service shutdown policy offers context: it says older services can become infeasible as audiences decline and describes a typical threshold of fewer than 1% of peak online players across EA titles. That is general EA-wide guidance, not a disclosed Tapped Out player statistic or an explanation of why this particular game ended.

In the statement quoted by Video Games Chronicle, EA said, “We have made the difficult decision to sunset Tapped Out,” and called ending the twelve-year journey “an emotional” decision. The statement’s wording was attributed to the game’s Facebook announcement; no individual speaker was named.
