Spoilers for the Death Note manga and 37-episode anime. The major named deaths occur across Light’s early clashes with the investigation, Rem’s intervention to protect Misa, the killings after Light takes L’s place, and the ending. This guide follows the manga and anime as separate continuities. It covers major named characters—not every person Kira kills, many of whom are unnamed or die off-screen.
How to read this chronology
Death Note’s manga is the source work; the television anime adapts it. The anime aired from October 2006 to June 2007 and has 37 episodes. The manga reference guide lists 108 chapters. Those figures describe the works, not a verified count of deaths.

No single reliable chronology establishes exact chapter and episode numbers for every named death. Where the available plot summaries do not establish a precise locator, this guide does not guess one. It also distinguishes a death shown on screen or on the page from one described as part of a broader sequence.
The story includes numerous unnamed Kira victims, so “every character death” cannot be treated as a complete census. The chronology below is limited to major named characters whose deaths are supported by the available plot summaries. It excludes live-action adaptations and later one-shot continuity.
#1 Best Overall
- Death Note box set (Volume 01-13) graphic novel
- Manufactured by: simon
- Height: 11.00 in. Width: 5.00 in
Early investigation: Naomi Misora
Naomi Misora
Light tricks former FBI agent Naomi Misora into revealing her name, then writes it in the Death Note, causing her suicide. The manga guide describes the same outcome. The summaries establish the event, but not a dependable chapter or episode locator; consult the relevant manga scene or anime episode for an exact number.
Rem’s intervention: Watari and L
Watari
Rem kills Watari as part of the sequence intended to protect Misa. The broadcaster’s story summary places his death alongside L’s and describes the deaths as part of Light’s plan.
Rank #2
- Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects
- Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies
- But when criminals begin dropping dead
L
Rem also kills L to protect Misa. This is a pivotal change in the investigation: Light takes on the role of the second L afterward. The available summaries do not establish exact chapter and episode numbers for either death.
After L: Aiber, Wedy, and the Yotsuba executives
Aiber and Wedy
After taking L’s place, Light removes collaborators including Aiber and Wedy. The story summary identifies them among those Light eliminates, but does not provide a complete account of every named or unnamed death in this stretch or an exact locator for each.
Rank #3
The Yotsuba executives
The same summary says Light kills the Yotsuba executives. It does not supply a complete list of the executives who die or establish individual chapter and episode numbers, so this entry describes the group event rather than presenting an unsupported roll call.
Light’s death: the manga and anime endings differ
Manga
In the manga, Light dies in the warehouse. The available comparison identifies this as the manga ending, but the cited summaries do not establish an exact chapter number here.
Rank #4
Anime
The anime stages Light’s end differently: he flees the warehouse and dies elsewhere. Do not treat this as the manga’s scene or assume the two versions have the same timing. The available summaries do not establish an exact episode number here.
Deaths this chronology does not pin down
Misa Amane
The material available for this chronology does not establish a precise date of Misa’s death or a definitive suicide scene. Her fate should not be presented as a confirmed, dated entry on that basis.

Unnamed victims
Kira kills many people who are not identified by name, including victims whose deaths occur off-screen. Because no verified complete victim count or exhaustive named-death chronology is available here, this guide does not give a total or imply that its named entries account for every death in the story.

| Continuity | How to identify a death | Ending |
|---|---|---|
| Manga | Use the chapter and scene in the original manga; exact chapter numbers are not established for every entry in this guide. | Light dies in the warehouse. |
| Television anime | Use the episode and scene in the 37-episode adaptation; exact episode numbers are not established for every entry in this guide. | Light flees the warehouse and dies elsewhere. |
For readers comparing the two endings, the original Death Note manga is the source work; the anime adapts it but changes how Light’s death is staged.
