The 2024 film keeps the core vampire story but reshapes its scale, characters, backstory, and climax. Writer-director Gary Dauberman compressed Stephen King’s sprawling 1975 novel into a feature film, choosing a smaller group of central characters and combining events into more concentrated set pieces. The result is not a scene-by-scene translation: it gives less space to the town’s residents and Marsten House history, while adding a drive-in confrontation and reimagining Kurt Barlow.
Why the film tells a narrower story
King’s novel was published in 1975 and follows a wide cast of residents as the town of Jerusalem’s Lot is consumed by vampirism. The 2024 adaptation, written and directed by Gary Dauberman, is a feature film rather than a miniseries; Den of Geek reported its runtime as 114 minutes. The earlier screen adaptations, in 1979 and 2004, were miniseries, a format that allows more room for a town-wide ensemble.
Dauberman said the novel’s many residents and storylines required him to select which characters and plot strands to prioritize. He wanted the town to feel larger than the central story, with other lives continuing beyond the screen. In a September 27, 2024 interview with io9/Gizmodo, he described the goal as “crystallizing it down to the core story elements, the core characters, while hopefully still feeling like there’s other stories that could be going on off screen that’s informing our main storyline.”
GamesRadar identified the film’s prioritized group as Ben, Mark, Susan, Dr. Cody, Matt, and Father Callahan. That is a core cast, not a complete accounting of every character omitted from the book. The effect of the compression is that the novel can give more time to individual townspeople and their lives before and during the outbreak; the film concentrates attention on a smaller group’s response.

What happens to the Marsten House and Ben’s history
The Marsten House remains an ominous presence, but the film reduces both its history and Ben Mears’s childhood connection to it. Dauberman said he filmed more material about Ben’s childhood encounter with the house, while some of its history survives in dialogue. He cut back the house’s role to make room for other stories and because he worried that too much emphasis could make the film feel divided between a ghost story and a vampire story.
This is more than a shorter version of the novel’s atmosphere: the film retains the house as a “beacon of evil” while giving less attention to the personal and historical context that surrounds it in the book.

How the film changes characters
Jimmy Cody becomes Dr. Cody
The novel’s physician Jimmy Cody is reimagined as Dr. Cody, played by Alfre Woodard. The change also shifts how the character is presented: Woodard described Dr. Cody’s decision to remain a general practitioner in a small town as a commitment to its community.
Susan is more purposeful
Susan Norton is characterized differently in the film. Kirkus describes the novel’s Susan as comparatively aimless and the film’s version as forthright, funny, and purposeful; the review also notes that Susan’s mother has a more consequential role in the movie. These are changes in agency and function, not just reductions in screen time.

Why the drive-in replaces a series of vampire hunts
The drive-in theater is a new gathering place for the film’s confrontation. Dauberman tied the choice to a practical adaptation problem: in the book, the vampire hunters go from house to house, and he wanted to condense those encounters by bringing the characters together in one location. As he put it in the io9/Gizmodo interview, “In the book, they go from house to house and they kill vampires. And I thought, well, I’ve got to condense that … and it would be cool if they’re all together [at this one location] …”
The drive-in therefore changes the shape of the climax as well as the setting. Cast coverage from GamesRadar also identifies the addition as a reason the ending differs from the novel. The important distinction is that the film consolidates the hunt into a cinematic group set piece; it does not mean the novel lacks communal confrontations.

How Kurt Barlow’s design differs
King’s Barlow is conceived as a European nobleman. Dauberman said he initially moved toward a more book-like version, but found that approach consumed too much story space. The film instead presents Barlow as a creature-like figure, with the 1979 adaptation influencing the direction.
That influence does not make the 2024 design a simple copy of the earlier version. Dauberman has described previous adaptations as informing choices, rather than as the sole explanation for them.

Other adaptation choices: period and imagery
The film remains set in the 1970s, the period of King’s novel, rather than modernizing the story. Dauberman also explained the glowing cross as an effort to visualize faith and belief, rather than rely only on the familiar image of a vampire recoiling from a cross. Cast coverage reports King-related Easter eggs as well. These choices preserve or reinterpret aspects of the book’s world, but they do not change the adaptation’s central strategy of narrowing the story and concentrating its major encounters.
