What did Eric Clapton say in Birmingham in 1976?
At a concert in Birmingham on August 5, 1976, Clapton spoke in support of politician Enoch Powell and his anti-immigration position. A 2026 EL PAÍS retrospective quotes the speech’s racist language, including the slogan “Keep Britain white.” That brief excerpt conveys the speech’s explicitly racist character; it should not be mistaken for a complete transcript or authenticated full recording.
The incident took place amid rising far-right sentiment and racist violence in the UK. EL PAÍS reports that the National Front had won 40% of the vote in Blackburn. That is a reported local figure from the period, not a nationwide result.
How did the speech help inspire Rock Against Racism?
The outburst galvanized photographer Red Saunders and associates who were developing the idea for Rock Against Racism, according to EL PAÍS. Saunders recalled: “I was shocked. I was a fan. I’d bought the albums and I’d seen him play.” The group held its first concert in November 1976 and went on to organize events across Britain.

One of the movement’s best-known events combined a march and a free festival in April 1978. EL PAÍS estimates that 100,000 people attended. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, recalling the event’s effect, said: “It was an incredibly emotional moment because for the first time I felt that I was surrounded by people who were on my side. That was the first time I thought that something had changed in Britain forever.”
Did Clapton apologize for the racist outburst?
Clapton’s later response was not an immediate, consistently expressed apology. The EL PAÍS retrospective reports that he continued praising Powell in a 2004 interview. In 2007, Clapton wrote that he had been “deliberately unconscious” of the racial conflict. In 2018, he expressed clearer remorse, saying he regretted his “fascistic” outburst and was ashamed of having been “a kind of semi-racist.” The chronology shows a shift over time rather than a single, prompt retraction.

Why did the speech return to public attention?
In 2021, Clapton opposed venues requiring proof of vaccination for audiences. The Washington Post reported his statement: “I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present.” The backlash prompted social-media users to resurface his 1976 diatribe.
The vaccine-passport dispute was a separate controversy; it is relevant here because it renewed attention to the historical speech, not because the two issues are equivalent.
