Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made four feature films together as principal co-stars. Ranked here by screen chemistry, how clearly each story uses their partnership, narrative momentum, supporting performances, and film-history interest, To Have and Have Not takes the top spot, followed by The Big Sleep, Key Largo, and Dark Passage. This is a critical ranking, not an official consensus order.
There is one scope wrinkle: Bacall also made a cameo appearance in Two Guys from Milwaukee. It is not a fifth feature pairing on the same footing as the four films below.
How the ranking works
The order weighs the pair’s chemistry and the role their relationship plays in each film, alongside storytelling momentum, direction and supporting performances. It also accounts for each film’s place in their shared screen history. These are critical judgments rather than scores or a claim of an authoritative consensus.
1. To Have and Have Not (1944)
The best starting point is also the film that began the pairing. Howard Hawks directed the Warner Bros. production, with a screenplay by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner. It marked Bacall’s screen debut; the American Film Institute records its U.S. release as October 11, 1944. AFI Catalog: To Have and Have Not

Bogart and Bacall’s sparring gives the film its defining charge. The attraction between their characters feels like an active part of the story rather than an ornament beside it, and the movie has the freshness of a screen partnership being invented in real time. Its most famous exchange captures that flirtatious confidence: Bacall’s character tells Steve, “You know how to whistle, don’t you? You just put your lips together and blow.”
2. The Big Sleep (1946)
This ranking discusses the 113-minute version released in 1946, not the 117-minute version completed in 1945. AFI’s catalog considers both versions; the earlier cut was later restored by UCLA Film and Television Archives. TCM notes that production changes added scenes after the 1945 version was completed, and that the earlier cut was restored in 1996. AFI Catalog: The Big Sleep · TCM: The Big Sleep

The film earns its high place through the lively, teasing rapport between Bogart and Bacall and Hawks’s direction. Its plot can be less straightforward than the central relationship, so it ranks just behind the more immediately engaging To Have and Have Not. The different cuts matter: a viewer’s impression of the film’s flow may depend on which version they see.
3. Key Largo (1948)
John Huston directed the final feature pairing. AFI Silver describes this black-and-white film as 101 minutes long. Its setup puts a World War II veteran in a coastal hotel held by a gangster as a hurricane approaches; Bacall plays the hotel proprietor’s daughter. AFI Silver: Key Largo

The film’s pressure-cooker setting and ensemble situation give it a different center of gravity from the earlier pairings. Bogart and Bacall remain a compelling presence, but the drama is less exclusively organized around their chemistry. That makes it a strong, distinctive finale to the four-film run, even if it is not the most concentrated showcase for the pair.
4. Dark Passage (1947)
Dark Passage belongs in the four-film feature pairing, but it lands fourth in this ranking because the other three make a more persuasive case as essential Bogart–Bacall showcases. Its place in the filmography is clear; the available catalog detail is thinner than for the other titles, so this ranking avoids attaching unsupported production claims to it. TCM lists it among their four films together. TCM: Humphrey Bogart profile

The cameo that is not a fifth feature pairing
Lauren Bacall also made a cameo appearance in Two Guys from Milwaukee, according to TCM’s profile. That credit is worth noting when “every” appearance is read literally, but it is distinct from the four feature films in which Bogart and Bacall were paired as principal co-stars.
