Jamie Lee Curtis has played Laurie Strode in seven theatrical Halloween films. Ranked by the strength of Curtis’s performance, the filmmaking, and how fully each story pays off Laurie’s arc, the 1978 original comes first, followed by Halloween (2018), Halloween H20, Halloween II, Halloween Ends, Halloween Kills, and Halloween: Resurrection.
How the ranking works
This ranking considers Curtis’s performance and Laurie’s development, suspense and filmmaking craft, each film’s role in its continuity, and whether its ending delivers on the story it sets up. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive measurement.

Which Halloween movies feature Jamie Lee Curtis?
Curtis appears as Laurie Strode in seven theatrical films. They do not form one uninterrupted storyline: the franchise branches into separate continuities.
- Halloween II (1981) continues directly from the 1978 original.
- Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) and Halloween: Resurrection (2002) follow an earlier Laurie-centered branch.
- Halloween (2018) returns to the 1978 film and disregards the intervening sequels. Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022) continue that branch.

Jamie Lee Curtis’s Halloween movies, ranked
1. Halloween (1978)
The original remains the most complete meeting of Laurie’s vulnerability, Curtis’s screen presence, and lean, controlled suspense. Laurie is not introduced as a seasoned action hero; she is an observant teenager trying to get through an ordinary night as danger closes in. Curtis makes her resourcefulness feel earned, and the film’s patient pacing gives the final confrontation its force.
It is also the essential starting point for every later Laurie story. Rotten Tomatoes identifies the film as Curtis’s feature debut and notes its place in her early career and the slasher boom. Rotten Tomatoes’ overview of Halloween.
2. Halloween (2018)
This film gives Laurie the most substantial later-life reinvention in the series. Decades after the original, she has shaped her life around the threat she believes will return, and Curtis plays the cost of that vigilance as well as its grim logic. The film’s strongest idea is that survival did not simply restore Laurie to the person she had been.

Curtis called it “a movie about trauma” in a HalloweenMovies.com interview. That framing helps explain why the film ranks above the other sequels: Laurie’s history is not just backstory, but the engine of the character and the conflict.
3. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
H20 gives Laurie a different kind of aftermath. She has built a life away from Haddonfield, but the past remains present in her fear and in the distance she keeps from people around her. Curtis brings conviction to the film’s central tension: whether Laurie can stop organizing her life around what happened to her.
Curtis described the project as intended to complete Laurie’s story. That aim gives the film a satisfying emotional shape, even if its route to the climax is less assured than the original’s. It belongs to the earlier Laurie continuity that continues in Resurrection, not the 2018 branch.

4. Halloween II (1981)
The direct continuation of the 1978 film has the advantage of carrying its immediate danger forward, and Curtis returns as Laurie while she is still in the aftermath of that night. The hospital setting offers a new arena for suspense, but the sequel leans more heavily on familiar slasher mechanics than on the original’s carefully built uncertainty.
Curtis said she agreed to make it because the story picked up where the first film left off: “The truth of the matter is I did (1981’s) Halloween II because it picked up exactly where (1978’s) Halloween left off”. The comment appears in an official franchise-site interview.

5. Halloween Ends (2022)
As the concluding entry in the 2018 trilogy, Ends takes a more unusual path than a straightforward final rematch. Laurie is trying to live beyond the trauma and loss that have defined her recent years; that shift gives Curtis room to play a quieter, more guarded version of the character. The film’s interest in what happens after a community’s violence is compelling, though its detours make the final reckoning less focused than the best Laurie-centered entries.
Rank #4
6. Halloween Kills (2021)
The middle chapter of the 2018 continuity’s trilogy is built around the immediate fallout of the previous film. Laurie is central to its emotional stakes, but spends much of the story recovering rather than driving the action. The film’s broader focus on Haddonfield’s response to Michael Myers gives it scale, while also leaving Curtis with less room to carry the movie than in the entries above it.
7. Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Resurrection is the least satisfying use of Laurie in this ranking. It follows the H20 branch, but its story quickly shifts attention away from her, weakening the payoff to the character-centered conclusion that preceded it. TIME placed the film last in its 2018 ranking of the broader Halloween franchise; that is one publication’s assessment, not a universal consensus. TIME’s franchise ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What order should you watch the Halloween movies with Jamie Lee Curtis?
For a first watch, the clearest approach is release order: it shows how the franchise’s storylines split and how each version of Laurie changes. If you want to follow one continuity at a time, use these branches:
- Original and direct sequel: Halloween (1978), then Halloween II (1981).
- Earlier Laurie branch: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), then Halloween: Resurrection (2002).
- 2018 trilogy: Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), then Halloween Ends (2022).
The 2018 film’s story deliberately branches from the original rather than continuing the events of the intervening sequels. For the franchise’s viewing-order outline, consult HalloweenMovies.com.
