Spoilers for all of Agatha All Along, including episode 7 and the finale. Rio Vidal is Death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” makes the reveal explicit: Lilia recognizes Rio beneath a skull-like face, says, “Rio. She’s Death,” and Agatha’s response shows that she already knew. Earlier episodes plant clues in Rio’s words, the witches’ Ballad, an Ouija-board scene and Lilia’s visions.
The clues before the reveal
On a first watch, these moments work as foreshadowing rather than proof. Episode 7 gives them their answer. The sequence below follows the clues in story order.
Rio and Agatha talk about killing each other
In the premiere, Agatha says it is not allowed for either of them to kill the other. Rio replies that she may not be able to kill Agatha, but she can make Agatha wish she were dead. The exchange sets up a supernatural limit around their conflict. It becomes more pointed once viewers know Rio is Death, though the scene alone does not identify her.
The “black heart” line
Rio tells Agatha, “Yes, I do. It’s black, and it beats for you.” It plays as macabre flirtation and fits Rio’s association with death. It is not conclusive on its own: the black-heart image carries other significance in the series.

The Ballad puts Death in the witches’ song
The coven sings, “I hold Death’s hand in mine…” The lyric’s capitalized “Death” points toward a personified figure, while the Ballad also calls for a Green Witch. Those clues converge when Rio joins the coven and the series later identifies her.
Rio says she is “the Green Witch”
When she takes her place with the group, Rio describes herself as “less ‘a’ Green Witch” and then “the Green Witch.” The distinction signals that she is not simply another witch filling a coven role. After episode 7, the line reads as a clue to her singular identity and status.

Her “job” involves the dead
Rio describes her work as her job and bargains with Agatha to receive the bodies of witches who die on the Road. The exchange positions Rio as a collector of the dead. It also hints at the emotionally complicated history between the two, without spelling out every part of it.
The Ouija board spells “D-E-A-T-H”
In episode 5, the coven’s Ouija board spells out “D-E-A-T-H,” despite the group’s rule against asking about death. It is one of the clearest early signals. The scene includes other supernatural activity, however, and does not name Rio as the person behind the answer.

Lilia’s visions lead to the answer
Lilia experiences visions out of chronological order, so her warnings and fragments do not immediately make sense. During the trial in episode 7, she sees Rio as a skull-faced figure and recognizes her. Lilia’s declaration—“Rio. She’s Death”—is the clearest in-story confirmation.
Agatha’s response confirms she knew
After Lilia names Rio, Agatha replies, “I like the bad boys.” Her reaction makes clear that the identity is not news to her. It reframes the earlier confrontations as encounters between former lovers, one of whom is Death.

What the series confirms—and what remains open
Agatha All Along confirms that Rio is Death, that she is the Green Witch, that she and Agatha share a history, and that her work involves collecting the dead. The explicit identity reveal occurs in episode 7.
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer described Agatha and Rio’s dynamic as “their love affair.” She also said the Death reveal’s imagery was designed to evoke the Death tarot card and connect to Lady Death’s classic comic-book aesthetic. These are Schaeffer’s explanations of creative intent, not additional rules stated by the series. In another interview, she said her own notion is that Death can take any form and that the Aubrey Plaza form is tied to Agatha, while leaving the idea open to viewers.

The series does not settle every detail of Nicholas Scratch’s death. Rio’s involvement is suggested, but it should not be treated as established fact that she caused his death, was his other parent, or made a particular bargain. Schaeffer has described aspects of the story as open.
How Rio’s reveal relates to Lady Death in the comics
Marvel Comics’ Death is a cosmic entity embodying death and mortality, sometimes called Mistress Death or Lady Death. The Los Angeles Times traces the character’s comic debut to Captain Marvel No. 26, by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich. In comics history, Death is best known as the object of Thanos’s unrequited affection, tied to his attempt to woo her with the Infinity Stones.
That history is context, not a map of the MCU’s future. The showrunner’s stated visual reference connects Rio’s reveal to Lady Death, but it does not establish that the MCU will adapt Thanos’s comic-book relationship with Death. The series’ own confirmed story is Rio’s identity and her history with Agatha.
For readers who want that specific comics background, a physical copy or reprint of Captain Marvel No. 26 is relevant because it is identified as Death’s first comic appearance. It is optional background, not required viewing or a definitive guide to Rio’s MCU story; its current editions and availability vary.
