The defining moment of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards was Hacks beating expected favorite The Bear for outstanding comedy series. The ceremony also celebrated Shōgun’s record-setting awards cycle, featured a moving In Memoriam performance and brought casts from Happy Days and The West Wing back together. Critics, meanwhile, found the political commentary sparse and renewed debate over whether The Bear belongs in comedy.
What happened at the 2024 Primetime Emmys?
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were held Sept. 15, 2024, at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Eugene Levy and Dan Levy hosted—the first father-and-son pair to do so—and ABC broadcast the ceremony, recognizing television from the 2023–2024 season. The televised program presented awards in 25 Emmy categories and the Governors Award. The Television Academy’s announcement has the ceremony details.
This was the second Primetime Emmy telecast of 2024: the 75th edition had been postponed until January after the Hollywood strikes. That unusual calendar meant some The Bear performers collected awards for different seasons twice within eight months, as The Washington Post noted.
The biggest wins and surprises
Shōgun set the night’s record
Shōgun won outstanding drama series, capping a cycle with 18 Emmys — Television Academy, 2024. That total combines four wins on the Sept. 15 telecast with 14 at the Creative Arts Emmys held earlier that month. The Academy called it a new record for a drama series in a single cycle; it is not a count from the televised ceremony alone. The Academy’s awards report breaks out the totals.

Hacks upset The Bear
Hacks took outstanding comedy series, a twist that the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post both framed as a surprise. Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky won for comedy writing.
Downs used his acceptance remarks to argue for more older characters on television. The Los Angeles Times transcribed him saying, “About 20% of our population is 60-plus, and they’re only 3% of those characters on television.” That is Downs’s onstage claim, not an independently verified statistic. He added, “And I would like to see more of them, because while I’m a great young supporting actor, I really want to be a good and old lead.”

Performances, reunions and speeches that stood out
Anna Sawai’s emotional thank-you
After winning lead actress in a drama for Shōgun, Anna Sawai thanked her co-stars and spoke directly to her mother. ABC transcribed her words: “Mom, I love you. You are the reason I’m here. You showed me stoicism, and that’s how I was able to portray Mariko,” she said. Sawai dedicated the award to “all the women who expect nothing and continue to be an example for everyone.”

Political commentary was limited, not absent
Los Angeles Times columnist Mary McNamara called the scarcity of political commentary “kind of deafening.” That was her critical reaction, not a measure of audience opinion. The night was not wholly apolitical: The West Wing cast encouraged voter registration, and John Leguizamo referenced diversity, equity and inclusion, according to the Times live blog.

The comedy-category debate followed The Bear
The Washington Post described the show as largely short on surprises until Hacks won comedy series, and revisited the debate over whether The Bear fits the comedy category. Its record comedy-series total and acting wins made the classification question especially conspicuous. That is a category argument, rather than evidence of a production failure; the reporting on the ceremony does not establish a major mishap as one of its defining low points.
How to read the night’s “best” and “worst” moments
There was no single measured ranking of the ceremony’s best and worst moments. The clearest anchors are the documented outcomes: Shōgun’s drama win and record cycle, the Hacks upset, Sawai’s speech, the reunions and Jelly Roll’s tribute. Whether the political quiet or the comedy-category debate made the broadcast less compelling is a matter of critical judgment, not an objective verdict shared by every viewer.
