Dan and Eugene Levy opened the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024, with a warm, self-deprecating set that made their father-son partnership part of the joke. “Classy as hell” is an opinion, not an official verdict—but the performance earned that description by leaning on gentle ribbing rather than a roast of nominees’ private lives.
What did Dan and Eugene Levy say in their 2024 Emmys opening monologue?
The Television Academy’s official opening video records the pair hosting the ceremony. They were the first father-son duo to host the Primetime Emmys, and their first joke set a modest tone instead of pretending to be seasoned masters of ceremonies.

Dan Levy described them as “More like actors acting like hosts, which is a huge gamble for us,” as the Los Angeles Times reported. Eugene Levy followed with a gag about borrowing another comic’s name if the night went badly: “And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.” The jokes acknowledged the awkwardness of the job and made their real-life relationship the premise.
What was the joke about The Bear?
The Levys took on the familiar debate about whether The Bear belongs in the comedy category. Eugene Levy said: “I love the show, and I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy. But in the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we will not be making any jokes.”
#1 Best Overall
The punchline is the apparent refusal: by announcing that they will not make the obvious joke, Levy delivers it. The bit teases an awards-category debate while making clear that the hosts are fans of the show, rather than turning the nominees into targets.
Why did the monologue feel classy?
Contemporary accounts described the set in terms that support the title’s judgment without making it a universal consensus. The Los Angeles Times called the humor “feel-good” and noted its “gentle ribbing”; TIME characterized the opening as “laid-back” and “gently upbeat.” TIME also observed that the punchlines largely aimed at nominated shows and the hosts themselves, not nominees’ personal lives.
Rank #2
That distinction is what made the approach feel unusually gracious. The Levys teased a show’s awards-category ambiguity, their own inexperience as hosts and the oddity of watching a father and son share the stage. The humor had an edge, but it did not depend on humiliating someone in the room.
A father-son partnership, not a forced routine
Their relationship supplied the set with an easy comic rhythm: Dan could undercut the formality of the host role, while Eugene could play along as both his father and his comedy partner. TIME also noted Eugene’s later line at the ceremony: “My most rewarding dad role has been being your dad [pause] in Schitt’s Creek.” It extended the family joke beyond the opening without turning the monologue into a string of sentimental declarations.

Warmth with a little edge
Before the broadcast, Dan Levy said they wanted the show “to feel celebratory” with “a bit of an edge.” He also said viewers understood they were not hard-edged comics and that the room could have warmth. Eugene Levy described their intended style as “a kinder, gentler approach,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The opening’s tone matched that stated aim.

Dan Levy also referenced Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer, who played lovers in Fellow Travelers, with the line: “Proving that you can be nominated for playing gay even if you’re not straight.” The Los Angeles Times framed the joke as a pointed nod to Hollywood’s history of straight actors playing LGBTQ+ characters.
It was one specific joke about casting and representation, not a comprehensive argument about the industry. In the context of the set, it added a sharper note to an otherwise gentle opening.
Where can you watch the opening?
The Television Academy hosts the recorded opening monologue. The Academy’s August 2024 announcement said the ceremony was scheduled to air live on ABC from the Peacock Theater on September 15, with streaming on Hulu the following day. That was a time-specific broadcast plan, not confirmation that the full ceremony is currently available on Hulu.
