Why did Evangeline Lilly step away from acting?
In a 2018 interview with ABC News, Lilly recalled that sudden international attention after Lost made her uncomfortable and that she decided to retire after the series. In her account, Peter Jackson’s invitation to join The Hobbit changed how she viewed acting. She said of that experience, “That helped opened my eyes to the fact that, okay, this job can be a joy, it’s just a matter of how you approach it.” She later accepted Marvel’s offer to play the Wasp.
Her selective approach continued. In a 2023 Esquire profile, Lilly said, “I’ve always kept myself on the outside.” She also explained that she had “always worked very little on purpose” to preserve a life outside Hollywood. What has Lilly said about playing the Wasp?
In a 2018 interview published by Disney News, Lilly discussed the Wasp suit with enthusiasm and described wanting the character’s fighting style to feel elegant and graceful. A 2023 interview with The Standard gives another view of her experience on a superhero set: recalling the all-women sequence in Avengers: Endgame, she said, “It’s the most comfortable I’ve ever felt on a film set.” She was describing that particular scene and environment, rather than making a general claim about every production.
