A viral parody post made it look as though he had lost his Sesame Street job because of federal budget cuts, but the joke was not an official Sesame Workshop announcement. The funding cut behind it, however, was real: in July 2025, President Donald Trump signed legislation rescinding about $1.1 billion allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
Did Elmo really get laid off?
No. In May 2025, a LinkedIn-style post portrayed Elmo as announcing a layoff tied to federal budget cuts. The New Daily described it as a fake post, not a personnel announcement from Sesame Workshop. The exact original post text has not been verified, so reported descriptions such as “Elmo is sad” or that he “loved his time at Sesame Street” should not be treated as confirmed verbatim wording. The New Daily’s account connected the parody to the Trump administration’s effort to defund public broadcasters.
A separate supporter-created parody scene also depicted Elmo being fired after a proposed elimination of CPB funding. WPTV reported on that scene; it is related context, but it is not the same item as the LinkedIn-style post. WPTV’s coverage describes the supporter-created video.
What federal funding was actually cut?
In July 2025, Trump signed a law canceling about $9 billion in previously approved federal spending. That total included about $1.1 billion allocated to CPB. PBS News reported that most of the CPB money was distributed to more than 1,500 local public radio and television stations. PBS News reported on the rescission and its public-media allocation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: CPB is a funding intermediary for public media, while PBS and NPR are national organizations and local stations are separate outlets serving their communities. The cut therefore reached beyond familiar national brands. It affected a broader network of local public radio and television stations that had received CPB support.
Does this mean Sesame Street was canceled?
No cancellation of Sesame Street is established by the cited coverage. The viral post turned a real public-media funding fight into a fictional Elmo layoff; it did not document a change to Elmo’s employment or the show’s status. Reports of financial strain at local public-media stations are not evidence that Sesame Street itself was canceled.

How have local public-media stations responded?
Later reporting described stations pursuing fundraising and operational changes, including staff reductions, amid the loss of federal support. Those accounts document real pressure on local public media, but they do not show that every station made the same changes or that the federal rescission alone caused each reported decision. Station finances and responses vary. PBS News’ subsequent public-media coverage reports on local effects.

People who want to help can give directly to PBS or to a local public-media station. Check the organization’s official website for its current ways to contribute; no specific donation mechanism is verified here. Supporting a local station is a direct way to help the outlet in your community, while the viral Elmo post itself was satire—not a fundraising appeal from Sesame Workshop.
