Elvis Costello was not clearly subject to a formal Saturday Night Live ban. On December 17, 1977, he and the Attractions began performing “Less Than Zero,” then stopped and switched to “Radio Radio” without first telling the show’s producers, according to Costello. He later recalled being warned that they would never work on American television again and said it took 12 years before he returned to SNL. In 2025, however, Lorne Michaels said the show had never banned anyone. The switch is real; the formal-ban label remains disputed.
What Elvis Costello did during the 1977 SNL performance
Costello and the Attractions appeared on Saturday Night Live on December 17, 1977. They had been booked after the Sex Pistols were unable to appear. The band started “Less Than Zero,” but Costello stopped the song and launched into “Radio Radio” instead. TIME’s retrospective recounts the switch and the later callback.
The change was unannounced to the show’s producers, Costello said in a 2015 interview with NPR’s Kelly McEvers, republished by KLCC. He explained that his dispute was with his record company, which wanted him to perform “Less Than Zero.” Costello thought the song’s specifically English subject might not connect with an American audience and wanted to play a new song. “My argument was not really with SNL; my argument was with my own record company,” he told McEvers. Read the interview transcript at KLCC.
Why he switched to “Radio Radio”
Costello’s account points to a conflict over the set list, not a protest against SNL or a response to an NBC order. The record company wanted “Less Than Zero”; Costello preferred the newer “Radio Radio.” He also said the producers had not been told that he would change songs. That makes the performance a deliberate break from the planned set, but it does not establish that SNL or NBC had censored “Radio Radio” or banned “Less Than Zero.”

Was Elvis Costello really banned from SNL?
There are two different claims behind the familiar “ban” story: Costello’s recollection of what he was told and how long he waited to return, and the question of whether SNL imposed a formal ban. Those are not the same thing.
| Question | What the source says |
|---|---|
| What happened after the switch? | Costello recalled being told that the band would never work on American television again. This is his retrospective account, not independent documentation of a formal order. KLCC/NPR interview, 2015. |
| How long was he away? | Costello estimated that he did not appear on American television for about three years and that 12 years passed before Lorne Michaels let him back into the SNL building. The estimates refer to different things: U.S. television generally versus SNL. KLCC/NPR interview, 2015. |
| Did SNL formally ban him? | In 2025, Michaels said, “We’ve never banned anyone,” describing the show as opportunistic about booking performers. His statement disputes the formal-ban account; it does not erase Costello’s recollection of a warning or his long gap before returning. Billboard Canada, 2025. |
The careful conclusion is that Costello experienced a long absence from SNL and remembered being warned, while Michaels later denied that the show formally bans performers. Calling it an “infamous ban” captures the popular story, but the available accounts do not settle whether there was an official blacklist.

How the controversy became a callback
Costello returned to SNL in 1989, 1991, and 1999. At the 1999 anniversary special, he interrupted the Beastie Boys’ performance of “Sabotage” and joined them in “Radio Radio,” turning the 1977 switch into a self-aware reprise. Billboard Canada’s 2025 account notes the return performances; TIME also describes the anniversary callback.

- Costello changed the song during the December 17, 1977 performance, moving from “Less Than Zero” to “Radio Radio.”
- Costello said the song choice reflected his disagreement with his record company, and that SNL’s producers had not been informed of the switch.
- The warning and the estimates of his time away come from Costello’s retrospective recollection. The roughly three-year figure concerns American television generally; the 12-year figure concerns his return to SNL.
- Michaels’s 2025 statement rejects the idea of formal bans, leaving the word “ban” contested rather than definitively established.
A separate story says Michaels gave Costello the finger during the performance. Costello told NPR that Bill Murray had told him about the gesture, but he did not claim to have personally verified it. His interview is the clearest account of that uncertainty.
