Eva Erickson and Joe Hunter say their friendship began early on Survivor 48, before Erickson trusted him with what support she wanted if she became ungrounded. In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly on March 27, 2025, the two described the immunity-challenge episode that tested that trust—and the close relationship they say continued after filming.
How Eva and Joe became allies
Erickson recalls connecting with Hunter when the Lagi tribe members introduced themselves. She was moved, she said, by the way he spoke proudly about his children and family. The two decided early that they would be each other’s number-one ally.
Erickson chose to tell Hunter that she is autistic and explain what she wanted him to do if she became ungrounded or overstimulated. Hunter described that confidence as a great honor. The interview presents this as Erickson’s personal account and her stated preferences—not as a general guide to supporting autistic people.
What happened during the immunity challenge
The moment came during the episode “Master Class in Deception,” which CBS lists as episode five of Season 48 and dates March 26, 2025. The official synopsis mentions an emotional immunity challenge but does not name Erickson or Hunter. The day after it aired, the pair discussed the scene in the joint interview.

Erickson said repeated difficulty with the ball-and-maze task, combined with the noise and intensity around her, contributed to her becoming panicked and losing her grounding. She compared the unbroken intensity to her earlier experience in cross-country, where she said similar episodes had led her to quit. These are her descriptions of what happened to her in that challenge, not a clinical explanation.
Why Joe waited—and what he did next
Hunter said he recognized that Erickson was in distress because she had already told him what might happen. He felt distressed that he could not immediately help, but did not want to cross a boundary in the game or draw attention to her without permission. He said host Jeff Probst gave him the go-ahead to approach.

Hunter said he then followed the instructions Erickson had previously given him, including applying pressure and squeezing her hand. Erickson said he remembered her specific directions and terminology. She had told production she did not want someone she did not trust stepping in during an episode; she wanted to handle the situation herself, with support from a person she trusted. She described the other players as well-meaning, while noting they did not know the specific support she had requested.
Her account is about what she wanted in this particular situation. It should not be treated as a universal response protocol or a judgment about who cared more. The important distinction in her telling is between taking over and offering the kind of support she had chosen in advance.
